A Fedora Turns Matthew Rhys Into Perry Mason in First Photo for HBO’s Limited Series

Fans of The Americans know how easy it is to shake up Matthew Rhys‘ appearance — curly perms and eyeglasses could change up his entire facade. In HBO’s new limited series Perry Mason, starring Rhys in the title role, all it takes is a hat to do the trick. The premium cable network released the first official image of the drama on Friday, featuring a disheveled Rhys with a fedora, a leather jacket, and 5 o’clock shadow.

The newly reimagined Perry Mason is set in 1931 Los Angeles, a metropolis that is booming in spite of the Great Depression. Based on author Erle Stanley Gardner’s characters, the show serves as an origin story for one of our culture’s most legendary criminal defense lawyers.

In this series, the action accelerates when Mason relentlessly pursues the case of the decade and ultimately finds a pathway to redemption. John Lithgow, Tatiana Maslany, Shea Whigham, and Nate Corddry round out the cast.

Ron Fitzgerald and Rolin Jones will act as showrunners. Amanda Burrell, Robert Downey Jr., and Susan Downey are among the executive producers.

Perry Mason debuts in 2020 on HBO.
