It’s the end of production for Cobra Kai. After 65 episodes, The Karate Kid spin-off series is now due to air its final supersized season throughout 2024 and into 2025.

If you can quite believe it, it’s been almost seven years since season 1 of Cobra Kai went into production in the Fall of 2017. Back then, the show was on YouTube Premium before transitioning to Netflix from season 3 onwards, and the show has never looked back.

Season 6 of the show, set to be the final season, began production in January 2024 following extensive delays due to the dual-Hollywood strikes throughout 2023.

Posted at 11:12 pm EST on June 10th, 2024, co-creator of Cobra Kai Jon Hurwitz confirmed filming has wrapped up on the final season, saying, “…and that’s a wrap!” with a post following a few hours later with the three creators sporting drinks at a bar celebrating their filming wrap. Joe Piarulli and Luan Thomas, two long-time writers on the show, can also be seen sporting drinks.

Ahead of today, filming had already wrapped up in Atlanta, Georgia, on May 19th, 2024, with Josh Heald posting at the time:

“That’s an Atlanta wrap on #CobraKai! Thank you to the people of this incredible city for being the heart and soul of these six special seasons. You’ve made our karate workplace into a true home away from home. Until we meet again… Cobra Kai Never Dies.”

How to Treat The Final Season of Cobra Kai

One fan contacted Hurwitz in the comments to express dissatisfaction with Netflix splitting up the final season. We’ve seen Netflix’s rise in splitting up seasons into multiple parts, but whereas most are split into two halves (Bridgerton, Stranger Things, The Lincoln Lawyer), Cobra Kai will be split into three.

Hurwitz, who’d already told us the new seasons are effectively three mini-seasons before, said:

“My advice is to stop thinking of Season 6 as one final season and instead view it as 3 distinct mini seasons. Each batch was written knowing the release plan, so the experience was designed to be enjoyed in 5 episode chunks. Waiting for all 15 episodes to come out will not enhance your viewing experience.”

As a reminder on the release schedule for season 6:

  • Season 6 Part 1 (5 episodes) premieres July 18th, 2024.
  • Season 6 Part 2 (5 episodes) premieres November 28th, 2024.
  • Season 6 Part 3 (The Finale Event – 5 episodes) releases in 2025 TBD (we’ve been told February 2025)

Asking why the new episodes couldn’t be released all this year, Hurwitz responded:

“Post production takes time. Just because we finished filming, doesn’t mean all the episodes will be ready for worldwide consumption by fall. And like I said, they were designed to be enjoyed in 5 episode batches.”

We’ll shortly be updating our mega-preview for Cobra Kai season 6 to reflect the filming wrap, but until then, let us know in the comments if you’re excited about the upcoming final season of Cobra Kai in the comments.
