Big Sky Review – It’s Over (2×09)

Reviews

While I love the convoluted mystery that Big Sky offers, sometimes, I think the show is too ambitious even for itself.

There are so many storylines happening all at once, and though most of them are interconnected, it’s can be hard to keep track of, especially after a hiatus.

When you throw in the fact that Stone is also undercover and not really who he says he is, it becomes that much more layered and hard to follow.

That being said, if you find yourself following along just fine, Big Sky Season 2 Episode 9 was a solid installment that finally gave some resolution to the whole Wolf Legarski versus Ronald Pergman situation that was dragging on just a bit too long.

The problem with Wolf is that he never had what it took to get the job done.

He wanted to help and rehabilitate Ronald, but his approach was all wrong. He made an enemy out of a very dangerous person. Ronald never saw Wolf’s actions as helpful or well-intentioned.

Treating people like animals, even if they deserve it because they are monsters, rarely ever works. And that’s even more true when the person you’re “treating” doesn’t think of himself as a monster.

Ronald and Scarlett live in a delusional state where they see themselves as the heroes in their own stories. That was never going to change. And thus, at the first available chance, they turned on Aggie and Wolf immediately with the same vengeance and violence that they were treated with.

Ronald knew it was kill or be killed since Wolf made it clear that his plan was to kill him. And Aggie, while confident, didn’t stand a chance against a mother who would do anything to protect her daughter and the love of her life.

It was a lost cause from the beginning.

If they really wanted to kill Scarlett and Ronald, they should’ve done it quickly and without hesitation. Every minute that passed by was a minute that Ronald and Scarlett could take advantage of.

Ronald’s body count keeps growing, though, in this situation, I think he likely believes that the deaths were warranted.

The same can’t be said for poor Joseph, who failed to fight off Ronald when he came by the PI office.

It was heartbreaking to see Cassie lose yet another person because of Ronald.

The worst part is that she didn’t even know that he was behind it just yet.

Mark Lindor had a hunch after visiting Wolf’s farm, but it was just that — a hunch — so Cassie didn’t put too much stalk into it.

However, the moment she gets proof that Ronald took yet another loved one away from her, she’s going to unleash holy hell. And I cannot wait.

If Wolf had killed Ronald, it would’ve been anticlimactic. For it to be effective, it needs to be Cassie dishing out justice. And if she really wants to make a point, she’d take out Scarlett first for good measure.

Of course, Cassie knows and understands what Wolf didn’t… that it’s not her place to be the jury and executioner.

If Wolf and Aggie simply turned Ronald and Scarlett into the police then maybe justice would’ve been served.

He had so many opportunities, including leaving Ronald behind to pay for murdering Joseph.

Every bone in Cassie’s body might tell her to kill Ronald when she finally gets the chance, but she knows that’s the easy way out for him.

He needs to suffer. He needs to realize that he’ll never see freedom or his loved ones again.

I’m honestly so concerned about Phoebe. She thinks that her mother and Ronald are “good people.” What does that mean for her future development? She has such a skewed perception of the world.

And also, who were Wolf’s partners? Why did they want him to rehabilitate Ronald?

All of that is enough to fill an hour-long episode, but there was still a whole second mystery that was layered on top.

Jenny initially thought that Joseph was just a victim that was in the wrong place at the wrong time and that Cassie may have been the target as she’s been circling the cartel.

It’s not a bad theory, per se, but the cartel has only one thing on their mind right now and that’s getting back their money.

And unfortunately, that means the kiddos are the target.

Stone, who is double-crossing both the cartel and Dietrich, let T-Lock go free as long as he delivered him the money.

T-Lock then threatened Max, so she broke into Bridger and Madison’s house to steal the cash. Of course, that made Bridger’s family the target as Ren wants her money like… yesterday.

Bridger felt betrayed by Max, who honestly had no choice but to help T-Lock.

At this point, it’s evident that the kids are in way too deep and need help from the adults. Bridger didn’t want to involve his parents so he sought out assistance from his sensei.

It’s weird that Bridger knows exactly what Ren is capable of and didn’t think that involving the sensei would put him at risk. But it did. His involvement was cut short when Jag’s lackey, Dhruv, sent a bullet through his chest.

Bridger was out of options and eventually turned to his parents, who are lawyers, though, they’d already been filled in by Madison.

Meanwhile, Max and Harper sought out Jenny’s help. It’s a little too late, but I guess it’s better late than never.

With Max and Harper’s account of what happened paired with Stone’s accounts from the inside, she can paint an actual picture and quite possibly solve this case without adding any other casualties.

I’ll be shocked, however, if Stone comes out of this alive. It seems highly unlikely considering all the enemies he’s made along the way.

The kids are the key to bringing down the cartel, while Stone is the key to bringing down the cartel and the local gang.

And Cassie and Lindor are steps away from ending Ronald’s reign of terror.

What did you think of the episode? Were you surprised by Ronald and Scarlett’s escape?

Who do you think Wolf was working with?
