Roswell, New Mexico Review – Free Your Mind (3×08)

Reviews

The feud between the aliens and the Regiment came to a head on Roswell, New Mexico Season 3 Episode 5.

The series has never shied away from politics, and it utilized the storyline brilliantly to address white supremacy, illegal immigration, and black lives matter/blue lives matter.

And it happened all while delivering an exceptional episode that kept the mystery of who might die at the forefront of everyone’s minds.

Plus, Liz and Max were reunited in an intense moment. Seriously, it’s impressive that they found a way to pack all of that into one hour.

Every single cast member has been getting a chance to shine this season sans Alex Manes, though I’m certain he’ll get a big storyline in the near future. Sadly, if you were looking for some solid Guerin and Manes moments, there haven’t been too many, but again, I don’t think the writers will let the fandom down.

We did, however, get a sweet moment between Guerin and Rosa… linda. After the Crashdown became the target of racist hate speech, Guerin couldn’t shake the guilt that he contributed to this, so he delivered a very wordy, yet genuine apology.

I haven’t really cared for Rosa’s character up until now, but this moment may have swayed me.

The episode picked up with Liz’s health troubles. As Max healed up Kyle and nursed him back to health, without suffering any consequences — he should’ve been dead considering his heart failure — it became clear that he was channeling Liz’s energy.

Liz may not have wanted to clue Heath into what was going on (understandably), but he wasn’t far off when he said he thought it was a parasitic infection.

Like a parasite, Max was siphoning Liz’s energy source.

At this point, their connection is beyond cosmic.

Once Max figured it out, he looped in Kyle, who then found out that he was also connected to Max now.

Max wasn’t able to save one without killing the other, which honestly, is quite a tough predicament to be in.

This gave Max no choice but to trust Jones to heal his heart. If it hadn’t been for a life or death situation, they would’ve likely never believed that Jones was telling the truth.

Though, at this point, what did he have to gain by lying? After all the work he did, he deserves to take a catnap in the pod.

Liz survived the ordeal — as did Kyle — but the same couldn’t be said for her relationship with Heath. And you can’t blame him as he was sent on a goose chase simply so that he wouldn’t be in the way. It’s not fun to be in a relationship plagued with secrets that’s also oddly tied to an ex.

Also, I can’t feel too bad about it because I never trusted Heath to begin with. He’s in cahoots with Genoryx, I know it.

We’ll see him again, but he’ll be an enemy and not a friend. There’s weird stuff happening in Roswell, so as a scientist, I would absolutely investigate it.

Zeke was collateral damage in all of this. In a way, the aliens did kill him, they just weren’t the aliens Jordan and his Regiment squad thought they were.

Honestly, you can’t argue with Jones’s reasoning that he sacrificed one terrible man to save three good ones.

Jordan’s little outburst, which was so satisfyingly live-streamed to the world, landed him in prison because justice always prevails in the end.

Unfortunately, there was still a looming threat over Kyle. He had a babysitter in Maria and then a man-sitter in Guerin, but when he finally went off on his own — and was seemingly planning on leaving Roswell — he encountered a vengeful Regi-member at Max’s place.

My guess is that Max was the intended target, and the man behind the mask was his co-worker (I don’t feel guilty about forgetting his name), who was in cahoots with the Regiment and eagerly referred to Max as Lt. Liberal. Gross.

However, Maria also had a gut feeling that something was wrong, and from the looks of it, she arrived just in time to, well, it’s unclear what she did.

Max found her lying on the ground, and the voiceover seemed to indicate that she was the victim.

But you can’t ever take anything at face value, so she could’ve been knocked unconscious. Kyle and the alien man also aren’t around, so it’s possible that he still may have taken a blow before she got there.

This just goes to show you what Final Destination tried to teach us all along — you can’t fight your destiny. It will always find you.

But… none of the people in Final Destination had a dedicated friend like Maria. She’s gone above and beyond for everyone, so I really hope she’s alive.

What do you think happened? Is Kyle alive? Is Maria? I’ll be upset if either of them dies. Kyle is the poor guy who is just gluing the team back together this season, while Maria’s little fling with Gregory Manes is out-of-this-world adorable.

Will Liz and Max find a way back to each other? They honestly don’t have to keep hurting each other, and I think it would be a very different situation if they were to get back together now.
