The Resident Review – Fork in the Road (5×20)

Is it just me or are things on The Resident starting to feel more and more like a daytime soap opera?

Now, don’t get me wrong, it’s still a really captivating and well-written soap opera, but dang, it’s getting dramatic up in here.

First up is the whole Padma/Leela/AJ/and Pravesh situation.

Padma’s desire to start a family with Leela’s eggs rocked the boat for Leela’s relationship with Pravesh.

The truth is, it shouldn’t have taken this long for Leela to come clean about the fact that she didn’t want to have kids.

She knew from the beginning that it was something that Pravesh truly wanted in life, so she was being deceptive by keeping it from him and stringing him along with a “maybe.”

On the other hand, Pravesh likely knew the truth deep down inside and didn’t want to admit it to himself because it would mean losing Leela for good.

It might not be the only reason as to why he offered himself as a sperm donor to Padma, but it does play a role in it.

If Leela allowed it, Pravesh would have technically fathered Leela’s child and been around in a natural way to see the child grow up.

While it’s definitely an insane situation, it also made sense.

Personally, I think Ialways knew that this was going to be the outcome, but it still stung to see Leela and Pravesh call it quits when they’ve been such a solid relationship on the series.

The two of them compliment each other so well, they’re equally as driven, and they have a playful aspect that makes them fan favorites.

And after Pravesh’s terrible dating life, he deserved a win.

Of course, it wouldn’t be fair to sacrifice his wants just as it wouldn’t be fair for Leela to sacrifice hers.

The break-up was the icing on what was a really terrible day for Leela, but admittedly, she made some terrible decisions.

She knew she was tired, but she was so determined to prove that she could excel in two specialities that she pushed herself past her breaking point and fell asleep during the procedure.

The misstep wasn’t deadly, but it had the potential to cost the patient so much.

Billie and Kit were equally as upset by Leela’s actions, and honestly, so was I. Leela is an incredible surgeon, and she should’ve known better.

At the end of the day, we’re all human. Someone needs to remind Leela of that because she’s trying to accomplish something that hasn’t even been done by the best of the best at Chastain… for a reason.

In one fell swoop, she could’ve lost it all.

Padman and AJ were struggling to find a middle ground when it came to their unborn child.

AJ agreed to be Padma’s sperm donor but only if he could be a father.

It wasn’t exactly how Padma envisioned the whole situation, and while she was open to letting AJ be involved in the child’s life, she also didn’t want to have it be controlled.

AJ may have been grieving his mother’s death, but man, it was a bit much. His intentions were in the right place, but it was definitely overwhelming to see him suggest the unborn child attend an Ivy League College. He even tried to give Padma his mother’s house so that the kid could grow up in his childhood home and have a good school district.

And again, nothing wrong with any of what AJ was offering as it proved that he had a realistic grasp on what it means to have a child and the type of things you have to consider, but it was just not something Padma was prepared for. Padma has always been a free spirit, while AJ came from a foster home and knew what it was like not to have stability. He also desperately wanted to have a family now that he was all alone — and I’m so glad the show clarified what happened to his siblings!

Both Padma and AJ’s reactions and feelings were absolutely valid.

Eventually, AJ — after witnessing Kit and Bell have such a great grasp on their relationship — realized that they needed to meet in the middle for any of this to work.

And simply by acknowledging it, Padma was able to see that he was going to be a supportive an cooperative father.

I’m glad they got it figured out and things are back on track because I truly believe that this is a good match-up.

Speaking of Kit and Bell… they’re engaged.

And it couldn’t be more perfect. Kit told Bell she would never kneel for a man and then got down on one knee and proposed to him.

To prove just how in-sync they are and that they are equal partners in all of this, Bell was already prepared with a ring.

They really are such a solid couple. They are their best versions of themselves — they know what they want, they know how to communicate, and they know how to meet each other’s needs.

It’s so wonderful to see such a healthy relationship on television. And I’m patiently awaiting my wedding invitation.

Things were a bit more dramatic for Cade and Conrad as they continued to deal with the fake prescriptions connected to the mob.

A homeless woman ended up in the ER after a pretty gnarly infection. One thing led to another and Conrad realized that Teri had a back full of pills that were allegedly prescribed by doctors at Chastain.

After treating her infection with… brace yourselves… lab maggots (I shudder just thinking about how absolutely disgusting that scene was), Cade and Conrad managed to convince Teri into filling in all the blanks about the mob’s operation so that they could report it to the FBI and shut this thing down once and for all.

Thankfully, they were able to keep Teri anonymous, which slightly made up for the fact that they were the reason Phoebe was murdered, but I feel like they still didn’t play it safe enough.

Why would they talk to an FBI agent in the open like that where anyone could see them, especially the man who got away with murder in a crowded hospital?

The mob saw Cade and Conrad before, so I’m not sure as to why this wasn’t more covert.

When they saw him staking out the hospital, Cade realized that her time at Chastain had come to an end since she had to go on the run again.

Conrad convinced her to stay because he’s obviously crushing on her, but if you think about it, it doesn’t make much sense.

Even if the mob found Taron and locked him away, he has plenty of mob members working for him who would likely finish the job and silence Cade.

Conrad has a daughter to think about, so he cannot be getting himself caught up in this mess, nor should he bring Cade.

No matter how much these two want to explore a life together, it’s just not safe. She was a great addition to the team, but it’s so far gone that I don’t see her sticking around without having a target on her back, which inadvertently puts everyone else in danger.

But also, why is Cade the only one in danger when both times, Taron saw Conrad with her as well?

And if the severity of the issue wasn’t emphasized enough, the teaser for the upcoming episode shows the mob placing a hit on Cade right in broad daylight.

The poor woman was gunned down in the way she feared — bleeding out on the pavement.

Will Conrad be able to save her? Or will her death weigh heavily on him?

What did you think of the episode?
