1883 fans are hoping that star Isabel May is starting a trend.
The young actress is well known to people who watch the Yellowstone spinoff as Elsa Dutton. Those who have enjoyed watching the show know that Elsa is more than just the daughter of James and Margaret Dutton. She’s more than just a tag along.
In fact, the new Paramount Network show is actually told through her eyes. It’s Elsa’s voice that viewers hear throughout the episode as show unfolds. She’s the one who is telling everyone what happened as she and her family were making their way along the Oregon Trail. In short, she’s a very important part of the show.
That’s one of the reasons why some who watch are hoping the actress who is front and center on the show can help start a new/old trend.
1883 Jumpstarting An Old Trend?
In the second episode of the show’s premiere season, there’s one scene that is very true to life when it comes to women and the late 19th century. Elsa Dutton is laying back in her bunk just enjoying the morning with her hands under her head.
The fact that Elsa has hairy armpits is not simply a tiny detail either. It appears the 1883 showrunners wanted the fact that Isabel May’s character didn’t shave her pits to be a discussion point.
Elsa is even asked by her little brother when he’s going to get hair there. She of course doesn’t really know, as puberty and when that sort of thing kicks in was not exactly something that was discussed among young children in the 1880s.
However, the scene did catch viewers’ attention because of the historical accuracy. It also seems as though at least some people thought that was an affect that was added in the show. However, one eagle-eyed Redditor noticed a picture of Isabel May where she was walking the red carpet.
Bringing It Back
The actress was holding her arms in such a way that it was rather obvious she had hair in her armpits.

The user CCORRIGEN posted the comment, “I guess arm pit hair is back in vogue! Having memories of early madonna images.”
However, it’s not entirely clear whether Isabel May is starting a trend, or whether it was just a neccesity. Some other Reddit users pointed out that she was still filming scenes where she might be showing off her arms in 1883.
Others offered up their opinion that they were hoping the actress who plays Elsa is looking to start a trend.
“Normalize women’s body hair,” one user wrote. “There is nothing wrong with it at all.”
“Good. Shaving is so damn annoying,” another wrote. “Nothing wrong with body hair on either sex.”
Of course, it’s likely going to take the 1883 actress to weigh in herself before it’s clear if she’s bringing something back, or just needed to do be accurate for her show.
