‘1883’ Star Can’t Stand Comparisons To ‘Yellowstone’

1883 star Sam Elliott is not one to hold back on his feelings. These days, he’s got all kinds of feelings about his new show being compared to the program it spun off from.

The actor has heard the comparisons to Yellowstone. He wants you to know, he’s not fond of those comparisons.

During conversations with media ahead of the premiere of his new show, the veteran actor volunteered his thoughts on comparisons between the two shows. The context of his thoughts is important — this quote came as he was praising the creator of both shows, Taylor Sheridan and his writing.

He’s not the only one to praise Sheridan. In fact, he’s nowhere near the only one to praise the creator of the programs. Every actor on both shows speaks highly of Sheridan.

Still, Elliott wants the two series to be kept as separate as possible.

1883 Star Wants To Be Untainted By Yellowstone

Yellowstone is all over this. We’re tainted by Yellowstone, which, on some level, I can’t stand,” Elliott said during the press event. “Because I think 1883 stands alone and will. Once it comes out, people are gonna say, ‘Oh, yeah — the only connection there is that it got John Dutton to Montana.’”

It shouldn’t surprise anyone that the star of one particular show doesn’t want it compared to another. Even if it is a spinoff, the actor wants people to recognize the work he and his castmates are doing.

He doesn’t want people to constantly hold the two shows up side by side either. And when talking about these two programs, it shouldn’t be too hard to see them as completely separate.

After all, while they are tied together by the Duttons, they are generations apart. The Duttons that are traveling to Montana in 1883 are not remotely the same ones that are there in the “present.”

It might be a bit different if Sam Elliott’s show was set in the same time period. When 6666 finally comes out, there will likely be quite a few comparisons.

Shea’s Not Alright

His annoyance at the comparisons between the two shows was not the only thing he talked about at the press event. Keep in mind this was before anyone had met his character.

He talked about the fact that Shea had been a soldier in the Civil War. He also lost his family at some point before the series is set.

Because of the things that have happened in his life, it’s clear that Sam Elliott’s character is not ok.

“I think Shea’s a bit of a psycho,” Elliott said, almost laughing.

Since 1883 premiered and is several episodes in, the audience has been able to really meet Shea and make their own opinions of him. They’ve also been able to determine if comparisons to Yellowstone are fair or not.
