Michael Strahan Talks About The Future Of His Career
NFL fans will remember that Michael Strahan retired from his career as a pro football player in 2007. He played 15 seasons with the New York Giants and became a Super Bowl champion during that time. Now, Michael has opened up about when he will retire from his current job.
Since hanging up his cleats from the NFL, Michael has played the role of television broadcaster. He sat alongside Kelly Ripa on Live, he has been an analyst for Fox NFL Sundays, and he’s also become one of the beloved crew on Good Morning America. However, the GMA star is now thinking about calling it quits on his TV career.
Many people know that Michael is also a father of four, which is one of the main reasons he is thinking about retiring again. He spoke about his plans for the future on In Depth With Graham Bensinger.
Why Is Michael Thinking About Retiring Again?
In October, Michael Strahan’s daughter Isabella was diagnosed with brain cancer. Since her diagnosis, Michael has taken time off from his television duties to be with Isabella. The pair gave an interview on Good Morning America about how the diagnosis impacted each of them and the entire family.
“You’d think I’m the athlete, the tough guy, the father in the family. It is not about any of that. It has really made me change my perspective on so many things,” Michael Strahan said at the time. For the former NFL player, his daughter’s diagnosis really underscored the importance of spending time with family.
This is one of the number one reasons Michael says he will be retiring eventually. “I love my life and I enjoy my life, but at some point, my kids are in college, I want to be able to go to college and say, ‘Yeah let’s take a trip,’” he told Graham Bensinger.
“I want a life where there’s some freedom at some point. Is it in two years, three years, five years, fifteen, twenty?” he said.
The GMA co-host continued, “I don’t want to lose gratefulness of being there and being a part of something. I’ll be off TV before a lot of people are sick of me being on TV.”
While Michael knows he will be retiring at some point in the future, he has not yet shared an official date. He did reveal that he has a bet going with his friend about how many years they’ll work before retiring, but he didn’t divulge what that number was.
“One day I may be like Forrest Gump when he’s jogging, and then he just stops and he’s got all these people behind him, and he turns around and says ‘I’m going home now.’ And they’re like ‘What? That’s it?’” he said. “That’s me when it’s over. Turn around and go home.”
