How Will ‘The Mandalorian’ Address Gina Carano Firing?

Latest posts by Nick Davis (see all)

The Mandalorian Season 3 is just around the corner. Fans are ready for the return of Djin Darin, Grogu, and all of their other favorite characters from the fantastic show. That is, all except one person whose status is currently in limbo due to due actions taken by the actor. Cara Dune, the tough-as-nails ex-shock trooper from the first two seasons, may or may not make a return to the show. Executive producers Rick Famuyiwa and Dave Filoni recently did an interview where they gave comments about the future of her character.

The Mandalorian sans Gina Carano

Disney fired Cara Dune’s actor Gina Carano in February 2021 after she made a string of controversial comments. Ever since then, there have been speculations about what would happen with her character in The Mandalorian. Will she die off-screen? Will she be recast? Famuyiwa and Filoni spoke about all of this in a recent interview with Deadline promoting Season 3 of the show.

Gina Carano as Cara Dune in ‘The Mandalorian’

“Cara was a big part and continues as a character to be part of the world. It had to be addressed in the creative and [Jon Favreau] took the time to think about that. It was something that was discussed as we knew it was going to have impact on the show. But at the same time, what has been at the heart of the show are the two characters — Din Djarin and Grogu — so ultimately it felt like a servicing of that, and around the Mandalorians,” said Famuyiwa in the interview.

So it seems like they’re not going to unceremoniously kill Dune off-screen. That should be good news for big fans of her character. As far as whether she’ll ever be recast remains a mystery. Famuyiwa and Filoni seem intent to emphasize that this show ultimately is about Djin and Grogu. All other characters can fall to the wayside in favor of ultimately telling a story about them.

“George [Lucas] used to talk about when he was making the prequels, he had so many great characters and they all wanted screen time. How do you do it when your job is to tell the story of Anakin Skywalker? I relate to that,” said Filoni.

Gina Carano’s Downfall With Disney

Ultimately, the fault for the lack of Cara Dune in Season 3 of The Mandalorian lies with Gina Carano. She made a string of social media posts in 2021 that led to people getting #FireGinaCarano to trend on Twitter.

It wasn’t until she made an Instagram post that she officially got the boot from Disney and LucasFilm, though. The post was political in nature and drew a comparison between one political faction in the US and Jewish people suffering in the Holocaust. It drew harsh criticism from all sides of the political aisle. The result was Carano having few sympathizers remaining and she was ultimately let go.

Season 3 of The Mandalorian premieres on Disney Plus on March 1.
