Sam Elliott has been getting quite a bit of attention these days. For the most part, he’s getting that attention for some rather negative comments. Surprisingly enough, his latest negative comments come about one of the shows that helped keep his career going.
While the gruff actor is best known for starring on 1883, that show was only born thanks to the show that came before. 1883 is a prequel to Yellowstone. Knowing that, it might be save to assume that Sam Elliott is a big fan of the first show. Turns out that’s not remotely true.
Sam Elliott Burns Down Taylor Sheridan’s Biggest Hit
The 1883 actor most recently made headlines on Marc Maron’s WTF Podcast for tearing apart Jane Campion’s The Power Of The Dog, a Netflix film that received 12 Academy Awards nominations.
He called the film a “piece of s—,” among other things. The actor had a big problem with the allusions of homosexuality throughout the film, the “evisceration” of the American West,” and also questioned Jane Campion’s credibility for directing a movie about the American West.
He was also mad at Campion for filming in New Zealand, despite the movie being set in Montana.
While those comments made the most noise, he actually took down the show that gave him his latest job.

It probably shouldn’t come as a massive surprise that he’s not a fan of Yellowstone. It’s well known that he actually turned down a small role with the show. It appears that he turned that down because he simply doesn’t like what Sheridan’s cowboy drama offers, story-wise.
However, it’s interesting that he was willing to be as specific as possible about why he’s not a fan.
“I’m not a Yellowstone fan, I don’t watch Yellowstone,” he said on the podcast. “I love Costner, there’s a lot of good people on the cast, a few of them I’ve worked with before, nothing against any of them but it’s just too much like f— Dallas or something for me… too much s—. Too much of that for me.”
Unapologetically Honest
The comments by Sam Elliott especially stand out because of his admiration for so many people attached to the project. In addition to saying he loves Costner, he’s had glowing things to say about Sheridan.
In fact, he called the writer and director a “genius.”
Knowing that, it seems odd that he would rip into the show as much as he did. However, it’s pretty clear that the actor likes his reputation. He’s worked hard to formulate it.
People tend to think he’s a real cowboy. However, he’s an actor. And he has some shows that he likes and some he doesn’t. However, when it comes to Yellowstone and Sam Elliott it seems as though he could have used a bit more tact.
