The Yellowstone prequel series 1883, the first chronological look at the Dutton family and how they made their way from Texas to Montana has officially wrapped. While there had been rumors that it might get a second season, it turns out the show is really and truly over.
There are going to be some bonus episodes at one point. But the main story and a chance for a full season is over. However, another sequel is about to take its place.
Producer David Glasser confirmed 1883 was one and done, and that 1932 will essentially serve as the “second season,” or next chapter in the story. That means that a new generation of Duttons are going to be taking on the challenges of but now, the genius behind the larger story himself is weighing in as well.
And in a recent interview with Business Insider, Glasser provided even more clarity on the future of the Yellowstone universe. The fact of the matter is that people should think of it as an anthology.
Yellowstone Anthology Ties Together
For these series to be an anthology makes some sense. That particular approach has become more popular in recent years. Creator Taylor Sheridn offering a series doesn’t necessarily have the same characters or storyline, but follows along similar themes makes some sense.
Especially as the show that started it all seems to be wrapping up. The best part of these kinds of shows is that the audience can watch each installment in the anthology independent of each other. Generally speaking, there’s usually something that ties the anthologies all together. That’s certainly the case when it comes to Yellowstone and 1883. It stands to reason 1932 will as well.
It should be pointed out that this does not fit the description of the upcoming 6666. That show is a direct offshoot that will have the same characters and it exists in the same timeline.

Those who are enjoying seeing the present-day Duttons both run their farm and do battle with various unsavory types may not get to see that unfold that much on the spinoff, but some well known characters are bound to show up.
How Long Will It Last
It bears pointing out that the producers talking about the series Taylor Sheridan is churning out as an anthology could mean the franchise as a whole could go on for quite a while.
There has certainly been talk that the original show will eventually come to a close in the very near future. Should the plug be pulled on Yellowstone, the idea of an anthology franchise could mean good news for the fans. It stands to reason another series might step into that gap with just enough in common to make viewers happy.
