The Diplomat Season 5: Renewal Status, Expected Release Date, and Potential Storylines

Season 4 of The Diplomat was quite a doozy, managing to continue the complex story surrounding ambassador Kate Wyler (Keri Russell) and her husband, Vice President Hal Wyler (Rufus Sewell), that showrunner Debora Cahn has been building for the past several years, while also pretty pointedly addressing current political events in the real world. It might have made for the most satisfying season of the blockbuster drama yet, so we’re champing at the bit for more.

As we’ll discuss below, though, the wait for a fifth season might take longer than past breaks were. There are a lot of unknowns with this one at the moment. Let’s break it down.

Has The Diplomat been renewed for Season 5?

It has! The Diplomat is returning for Season 5, but it took longer than usual to make the decision. It’s likely that delay was more about the state of Netflix in general than an indictment of Season 4’s viewer numbers, since the streamer in October laid off a bunch of employees and got rid of some of its most prominent executives, including Bela Bajaria, the person who likely would have had the final say on the renewal. This was the first time since Season 1 that the series didn’t receive a renewal order before its current season premiered.

Everything you need for fall TV:

The Diplomat Season 5 release date prediction

Netflix hasn’t announced a premiere date for Season 5, but the show has been good about putting new seasons out every fall. One big reason it has been able to pull that off is that Netflix had been renewing it early. While Season 4 was greenlit in May 2025, five months before Season 3 dropped, The Diplomat wasn’t given its order for Season 5 until two weeks after the Season 4 premiere. The slower-than-usual renewal may interfere with that yearly cadence, though it’s likely that the creatives behind this series were already working on Season 5 anyway. It’s become somewhat common for big shows to work on developing a new season before said new season is officially greenlit. Still, given the circumstances, we wouldn’t be surprised if Season 5 takes longer to come out than Season 4 did.

The Diplomat Season 5 expected cast and crew

It looks like showrunner and creator Debora Cahn will be back for Season 5, and we expect that all living characters will return. That said, The Diplomat did kill one of its main characters, U.K. foreign secretary Austin Dennison, off-screen in the middle of Season 4 without including actor David Gyasi in any of the season’s episodes, so the series could possibly shed other major characters in that same way.

Expected Season 5 cast:

Keri Russell as Kate Wyler, U.S. ambassador to the U.K.
Rufus Sewell as Hal Wyler
Ato Essandoh as Stuart Hayford, the ambassador’s chief of staff
Ali Ahn as Eidra Park, the local CIA station chief
Allison Janney as Grace Penn, the U.S. president
Bradley Whitford as Todd Penn, the First Gentleman
Jodie Whittaker as U.K. Prime Minister Bethan Vaughn

The Diplomat Season 5 potential storylines

Warning: The remainder of this article contains major spoilers for Season 4 of The Diplomat

Season 5 will offer the biggest change in status quo that The Diplomat has undergone to this point. While Kate Wyler has managed to navigate a lot of messy situations, she finally had a villain in Season 4 she couldn’t defeat with any of her usual tricks. Thanks to President Penn’s dramatic intractability with regards to the situation with Russia and the Poseidon weapon, and her insistence on quashing any and all dissent, Kate realizes she’s all out of options, and she resigns.

Season 5 will deal with that fallout, but it’s not easy to figure out what that will look like, because now that Kate is out of a job, we’ve moved beyond the show’s original framework. Season 5 could take place entirely in the U.S., leaving the U.K. folks behind — which wouldn’t be that surprising after Season 4 already set aside most of the long-term British characters, with Dennison dead and a new prime minister taking over.

What to expect from Season 5, broadly, is for Kate and Hal to return home and attempt to mount some sort of resistance against Penn before she blows up the world. But now that we’re off the beaten path, we can’t really see where we’re going very clearly. Which is exciting, to be honest.

Let’s talk about that Season 4 cliffhanger

Every season of The Diplomat has thus far ended on a cliffhanger, but this one was different. Unlike with the previous cliffhangers — which were “oh my God, what just happened?!?” sort of situations that were very surprising and came out of left field — the end of Season 4 was something the show had been building up to for two seasons, so we know exactly what it means.

At issue throughout Season 4 was the Russian nuclear submarine and its nuclear superweapon, the Poseidon, which ran aground near the U.K. during Season 3. The U.S. sneaked in and stole the weapon from the submarine without telling anyone — a clear and obvious villain move that President Grace Penn and Hal spent all of Season 4 trying to rationalize as more and more people found out about it.

Penn in particular became something of a hardliner about the whole thing, rebuffing all attempts by the U.K. to play nice with Russia, which wanted to swing by and recover whatever there was to recover from the sub wreckage. And her stance led the U.K.’s prime minister to resign so he wouldn’t have to deal with this mess anymore.

The U.S., U.K., and Russia all knew that this situation could escalate to a new world war if they handled it wrong, and with that somewhat significant potential consequence weighing on her mind, the new U.K. PM decided to give the Russians an escort as they attempted to recover the bodies and the Poseidon weapon from the ocean floor.

But Penn, who during Season 4 was at least partially an analog for America’s real-life president, decided the best course was to deploy warships to forcibly prevent Russia from investigating its sub. And in the process, she threatened to fire on any NATO country’s ships if they get in the way. The threat was first made informally, by Penn’s husband — who Grace fully wrangled into submission by the end of the season — and then in public at the G7 summit in Italy.

So what do you do with a bullish president who seemed to be trying to start a war and refused any advice that might contradict their aims? Kate, realizing there’s nothing she can do to rein in Penn the normal way, resigned publicly, right in front of everyone during that G7 meeting. The move inspired the president’s chief of staff, secretary of state, and her husband Hal, the vice president, to do the same. And the season ended with Hal announcing their resignations to the press. It’s a fascinating contrast with how things are going with the real-life U.S. government in 2026, and it seems obvious that Debora Cahn and her writing team felt an obligation to address that elephant in the room this season.
