Vought Rising: Everything There Is to Know About The Boys’ Spin-off Series

The Boys may be over, but the Amazon Prime Video franchise lives on with a pair of spin-off shows. The first of these is the prequel Vought Rising, which will delve into the lore of the series in order to give us a look at what this world was like when supes first emerged, including the oft-teased adventures of Soldier Boy (Jensen Ackles) and Liberty (Aya Cash) decades before the events of The Boys

Despite being set in the 1950s, don’t expect Vought Rising to be more prim and proper than the main series was. There’s certain to be plenty of cursing, gore, and crude jokes in Season 1 — not to mention the biggest orgy of all time.

Let’s take a closer look at what we know so far about Vought Rising.

Vought Rising Season 1 expected release date

Vought Rising is slated to premiere in 2027, but we don’t have any more specific info. But since the season has already completed filming, there’s a pretty good chance the premiere date will be in the first half of the year.

Vought Rising Season 1 teaser trailer

This isn’t the sort of teaser that’s heavy on plot — it’s more a montage of clips that set the stage and the vibe. And the good news is that it doesn’t seem like it’ll be any less vulgar or violent than The Boys was.

Vought Rising storylines, and connections to The Boys

Vought Rising will tell the story of the original slate of Vought-brand superheroes, who got their powers from the original V1 formula — the version of the serum that makes supes that are immortal, but which killed most of the folks that were subjected to it. That group officially seems to include Soldier Boy, Liberty, Bombsight, Torpedo, and Private Angel. Apparently, there will be a murder mystery at the heart of Season 1’s story.

But they aren’t the only ones who got powers from the V1. In the trailer, we see Jordan Myrie’s as-yet-unnamed character clearly suping up and being tested. And we also get a glimpse at what looks an awful lot like the original version of Soldier Boy. While he wasn’t ever mentioned on the TV version of The Boys, there were a couple other Soldier Boys before the one we know in the comics. The original Soldier Boy fought in World War II, but he knew so little about fighting or strategy or tactics or military protocol that he got himself and his entire squad killed by Germans on his first mission.

While the new series will take place in the 1950s, many years before the events of The Boys, there are likely to be some direct connections to the main series in Vought Rising thanks to the presence of Clara Vought and Jensen Ackles’ Soldier Boy, both of whom were introduced on that show and had important roles on it. Plus, both Soldier Boy and Bombsight are still alive as of the series finale of The Boys, so there’s a chance for Vought Rising’s influence to extend into the present day — perhaps even to the other spinoff series, The Boys: Mexico, which we still know basically nothing about.

While we don’t know a ton of specifics about where the story will go, there’s one very important bit from the franchise lore that is almost certain to come up during this series: the time Soldier Boy and Liberty threw the very first Herogasm orgy. There’s about a 5,000% chance we’ll get to see the real thing after Soldier Boy kept bringing it up on The Boys.

Paul Gellong, who has served as a writer and producer on The Boys will serve as showrunner on the spin-off, and Aya Cash and Jensen Ackles will reprise their roles from the main series. Mason Dye’s Bombsight, who popped up in an episode of The Boys in the final season, will also be back in one of the main supe roles. And Ethan Slater’s Thomas Godolkin, who was the secret baddie in Season 2 of Gen V, will also be back, though we don’t know how big his role will be.

Vought Rising cast list

Who are the good guys in Vought Rising?

This is an impossible question to answer at this point, since the marketing has revolved around the supes themselves — and one of those supes, Clara Vought (aka Stormfront from The Boys), was literally a card-carrying member of the actual Nazi party in Germany during World War II. So she’s not really an option. Likewise, since Soldier Boy was still in love with her in the present, and we know he kinda sucks otherwise, he’s not really a great protagonist candidate either, at least not in the traditional sense.

More likely is that Vought Rising will loosely mirror the premise of The Boys, in that there’s a faction within the US government that will attempt to check the power of these new supes, and it’ll be some of those folks who serve as the protagonists here. Judging from the trailer, our guess is that KiKi Layne’s character will be involved with or lead this faction. But it’s tough to figure out because the trailer doesn’t give us much to work with.
