Big news for signing families! In a massive step forward for accessibility, Netflix is making its Kids & Family library more inclusive than ever.
As first reported last week by IndieWire, Netflix has officially teamed up with SignUp Media, an online provider of sign language interpretations, to roll out American Sign Language (ASL) interpretations across its platform.
Per Netflix, this new integration is available now for the first time and covers 89 titles (already up from the initially announced 73 titles), including Netflix Kids & Family titles—totaling over 200 hours of content that spans 41 of your favorite franchises.
The best part? Deaf performers bring your kids’ favorite characters to life in ASL. That means you’ll get authentic, lively interpretations for characters like Pikachu (Pokémon Horizons), Captain Barnacles (Octonauts), and Ms. Frizzle (The Magic School Bus Rides Again).
Instead of forcing users to search for separate, hard-coded ASL versions of shows, SignUp Media operates via a Google Chrome browser extension (and is therefore limited to the web for now). Once installed, the signing overlays right on top of the show. You can move the interpreter window, resize it, or pop it out to fit wherever works best for your couch setup. (SignUp has even teased that customizable backgrounds are coming in the future to help Deaf/Blind users better track hand movements!)
The company also supports Disney+, YouTube, and Peacock, with Disney+ having the strongest title lineup so far with 160 titles supported.
According to IndieWire, SignUp Media has committed to an incredible level of casting authenticity. Every hour of on-screen interpretation requires three to four hours of preparation, with performers analyzing tone, pacing, and unique show-specific vocabulary. They also cast true to the characters on screen, such as hiring an Asian Deaf performer for Wish Dragon and a Cuban Deaf performer for Vivo.
Elisa Beniero, Senior Manager of Strategy & Innovation at Netflix, expressed the streamer’s excitement: “With ASL now joining subtitles, Subtitles for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing (SDH), dubbing, and Audio Description (AD) as another way members can enjoy our content, we’re ensuring our Deaf and hard-of-hearing members have more ways to experience the stories they love.”
The implementation works great, allowing you to move the ASL window (which is essentially just a YouTube video synced to the timestamp of the Netflix player).

Here is the complete list of 89 Netflix titles currently supported as of the time of publishing, representing around 1% of Netflix US’s library. Note that some of these are licensed titles so will depart the service.
