Netflix in the United States is getting a very late Christmas movie in the form of the R-rated horror comedy There’s Something in the Barn, which will make its streaming debut on Netflix next month.

Set to arrive on March 20th, 2024, the movie is coming to Netflix via the Sony first window deal, whereby most titles from Sony Pictures hit Netflix for 18 months following its exclusive theatrical window.

Although a Norwegian film, the movie is spoken in English throughout. It is about a family that fulfills their dream of returning after inheriting a remote cabin in the mountains of Norway. While there, they encounter a blood-thirsty gnome with an axe (and saw) to grind.

Magnus Martens directed the movie, with Aleksander Kirkwood Brown serving as the writer for the project that was produced by 74 Entertainment, XYZ Films, and others.

Martin Starr (known for Spider-Man: No Way Home and The Incredible Hulk) leads the cast alongside Amrita Acharia (Game of Thrones, The Good Karma Hospital) with Kiran Shah, Zoe Winther-Hansen, Townes Bunner, and Calle Hellevang Larsen also starring.

To my surprise, the movie scored pretty well with critics, although that’s only on a couple dozen reviews per RottenTomatoes. On the aggregator review site, the movie holds a 79% score. Dread Central, a site dedicated to all things horror, said:

“Depending on your particular penchant for Yuletide horror, Magnus Martens’ There’s Something in the Barn is a serviceable blend of horror and comedy that doesn’t do any favors for the elf community at large.”

On the audience side, it’s more mixed, having 51% on RT with IMDb equally mixed at 5.5 out of 10.
