Well, The Diplomat fans, it looks like the cat is out of the bag—or rather, written on the whiteboard! While we’ve known for a little while that the fourth season of Netflix’s hit political thriller was in the can, we finally have a solid release window straight from the ambassador herself.
In a recent deep-dive profile and video interview with Variety, real-life couple Keri Russell and Matthew Rhys sat down to play a newlywed-style trivia game. While the audio mostly highlighted their witty banter, eagle-eyed viewers caught a massive visual clue.
Around the 8:30 mark of the video, the couple is asked: “In which season of The Diplomat will Keri’s character become president?” When they flip their whiteboards, Rhys has written “NINTH,” playfully predicting a nine-season run for the series. Russell, however, completely ignores the trivia prompt, cheekily holding up a board that reads: “LET’S WATCH IN OCTOBER.”

An October launch perfectly aligns with the show’s current timeline. As we detailed in our own big preview published late last month, production on Season 4 officially wrapped in late June. Looking at the October schedule, the only Thursday big English-language series that’s been filled is Below on October 8th. The rest are all up for grabs.
But the release date tease wasn’t the only treat The Diplomat fans got this week. The Variety piece also dropped some fascinating behind-the-scenes nuggets about the series—most notably, how close we came to only getting a single season.
Because Russell was initially hesitant to uproot her “quiet little life” in New York to shoot in London, the entire future of the show rested on her being happy. Creator Debora Cahn frankly admitted, “If it didn’t work out for her life and for her family, there wasn’t going to be a Season 2.”
Luckily for us, she stayed. Cahn actually ended up weaving Russell’s real-life humility into the character. Despite projecting “breathtaking beauty and poise” to the world, Cahn notes that Russell “seems to think that she’s constantly falling apart at the seams, held together with spit and duct tape”—an energy that perfectly translates to Kate Wyler’s chaotic brand of diplomacy.
For Russell, playing those messy, flopping moments is the best part of the job. “You always want to be losing,” she told Variety. “You don’t ever want to be, like, ‘She’s the best surgeon in the entire Northeast.’”
As for where we find Kate and Hal (Rufus Sewell) in Season 4? Russell reaffirmed that despite the political backstabbing and geographical hurdles of Hal’s new vice presidential gig under Allison Janney’s Commander-in-Chief, the show is “really rooting for marriage.”
With an October release now practically confirmed by Russell’s whiteboard tease, the wait for new episodes is much shorter than anticipated. We’ll be keeping our ears to the ground for Netflix’s official PR drop and trailer, which should be right around the corner.
