Netflix UK is about to join several other Netflix regions in picking up a show that’ll feel at home to anyone who’s a fan of Virgin River or The Lincoln Lawyer. Both seasons of the hit cozy crime procedural Murder in a Small Town are officially touching down on Netflix in the United Kingdom on August 1st, 2026.

The highly requested arrival of the series follows a staggered international rollout by Netflix earlier this year. Subscribers in Australia, New Zealand, and the Netherlands were the lucky first batch to receive the show when it dropped in those regions back on March 25th, 2026, albeit with only the first season. Now, British fans finally get their turn to binge all 18 episodes.

Here’s a deep dive into everything you need to know about the series, who stars in it, and where it streams if you live across the pond.

What is Murder in a Small Town about?

Based on the Edgar Award-winning Alberg and Cassandra Mysteries—a beloved nine-book series by Canadian author L.R. Wright—the show is a picturesque police procedural that blends the charm of a tight-knit community with a satisfyingly dark edge.

The series follows Karl Alberg, a world-class detective who is completely battered and burnt out by the grueling realities of big-city police work. Looking to soothe his psyche, he relocates to the idyllic, quiet coastal town of Gibsons in the Pacific Northwest.

But, as the genre demands, this gentle paradise hides more than its fair share of lethal secrets. Karl’s dreams of a peaceful, low-stakes job are shattered as complex murders continue to wash up on his shores. He soon crosses paths with local librarian Cassandra Lee, who becomes his sounding board, local guide, and romantic interest.

Who is in the cast?

The show features a fantastic roster of Canadian talent, alongside some massive Hollywood heavyweights who drop by for overarching storylines and guest-starring roles.

  • Rossif Sutherland (The Handmaid’s TaleParis Paris) leads the series as Chief Karl Alberg.
  • Kristin Kreuk (SmallvilleBurden of Truth) stars opposite him as Cassandra Lee.
  • Marcia Gay Harden (The Morning ShowMystic River) joined the cast in Season 2 as Mayor Christie Holman, a political operator who frequently complicates Karl’s investigations.
  • Aaron Douglas (Battlestar Galactica) plays Sergeant Sid Sokolowski.
  • Mya Lowe plays Edwina Yen.
  • Bethany Brown plays Corporal Laila Jackson.
  • Savonna Spracklin plays Isabella Harbud.

The show is also known for its stellar guest stars, who have included acting legend James CromwellJamie Chung, and Castle alum Stana Katic.

Where does it stream in the United States?

If you’re reading this from the US and trying to pull up your Netflix app—stop right there. Murder in a Small Town is a broadcast network property Stateside.

The show is a major international co-production between Canada’s Global network and FOX in the United States. Because of FOX’s distribution umbrella, US streaming rights are firmly locked down by Hulu. Over in the States, episodes air on network TV and head straight to Hulu the very next day. We have seen a number of shows from Fox licensed to Netflix US (including Doc and Best Medicine), so don’t rule out it ever heading to Netflix US.
