As the dust settles on last night’s Emmy Awards, Netflix has decided it’s the perfect time to drop a political bombshell of its own. We finally have our first official look at the highly anticipated fourth season of The Diplomat, and if the new trailer, striking key art, and batch of images are anything to go by, the stakes have literally never been higher.

A Trailer Full of Treason, Submarines, and Marriage Troubles
Creator and showrunner Debora Cahn has mastered the art of blending high-stakes international espionage with razor-sharp interpersonal drama, and the new Season 4 trailer leans all the way in.
The footage kicks off with a chilling revelation from Kate Wyler (Keri Russell): a Russian sub carrying an apocalypse weapon ran aground, and someone stole it. The twist? The “someone” appears to be an unholy alliance between her own husband, Vice President Hal Wyler (Rufus Sewell), and President Grace Penn (Allison Janney).
“My concern is that the two of you together are, yeah, dangerous,” Kate says in the trailer, and they couldn’t be more right. The footage highlights the frightening reality of Hal and Grace operating as a unit without any brakes.
But Kate isn’t fighting this battle alone. The new season introduces a fascinating new dynamic: Kate teaming up with the President’s husband, Todd Penn (Bradley Whitford). It’s a battle of the spouses as Kate and Todd unite to stop the Grace-Hal alliance from hurling the United States into a full-blown war with Russia. Kate does what she’s done since early in the show and tries to calm over relationships and get everyone working together (or rowing in the same direction as she puts it), but not everyone is buying it, with her accused of sounding like a “dodgy car dealer.”
Netflix has once again provided the logline for the season that perfectly sets the stage for the chaos to come:
“In Season Four of The Diplomat, two marriages threaten to eat each other alive. One catastrophic moment shatters the fragile peace Kate Wyler brokered between the US and UK, as well as the crumbling marriage she’s trying to save. While she fights to stem the bleeding, President Grace Penn and VP Hal Wyler’s conspiracy to steal Russia’s most powerful weapon hurtles the United States toward war. Kate and Todd, at best an uneasy pair, unite to stop the Grace-Hal alliance from upending the balance of power abroad and at home. Four Emmy nominees paint an unmissable portrait of two marriages: Keri Russell as Ambassador Kate Wyler, Rufus Sewell as Vice President Hal Wyler, Allison Janney as President Grace Penn, and Bradley Whitford as Todd Penn.”

Alongside the trailer, Netflix released the official poster for Season 4, which is a masterclass in tension. It features the core four—Hal, Grace, Kate, and Todd—locked in an intense stare-down in front of a classical painting. It’s a brilliant visual representation of the two marriages preparing to “eat each other alive.”
We were also treated to an expansive gallery of brand-new stills featuring the ensemble cast. Kate and Hal look tense throughout, coats outside, cold stares in formal wear, and it’s obvious Hal’s backchannel dealings with the President are taking a toll on the marriage. Allison Janney’s President Penn is shown running the Oval Office with new VP Hal Wyler by her side, while Rory Kinnear is back as PM Nicol Trowbridge, who’s apparently “angry” enough to risk “armed conflict.” Ali Ahn and Ato Essandoh share a genuinely intimate moment as Eidra and Stuart, so that storyline’s clearly still cooking. Nana Mensah’s back too, spotted with a G7 Italia credential. And in the most unexpected pairing, Kate has a warm, casual dinner with Bradley Whitford’s Todd Penn, teaming up against their own spouses.
