The Starz to Netflix pipeline shows no signs of slowing down. Just days after we learned that Blindspotting is making its way to the service, we’ve now got word that the short-lived 2022 period drama Dangerous Liaisons will arrive on Netflix in the United States on October 27th.
Created by Harriet Warner (Call the Midwife, Tell Me Your Secrets), the series served as a lavish prequel to Pierre Choderlos de Laclos’s classic 18th-century novel, which famously inspired the 1988 Glenn Close film and the 1999 teen cult classic Cruel Intentions.
Spanning eight episodes, the television adaptation explores the sultry and manipulative origin story of how the iconic characters, the Marquise de Merteuil and the Vicomte de Valmont, met as passionate young lovers in the slums of Paris on the eve of the French Revolution.
Alice Englert (Ginger & Rosa, Beautiful Creatures) and Nicholas Denton (Glitch) lead the series as the notorious lovers, with a stellar supporting cast that includes Academy Award nominee Lesley Manville, Carice van Houten (Game of Thrones), Kosar Ali, and Fisayo Akinade.
If you didn’t catch the series during its original run on Starz, you aren’t alone. In fact, the show has been incredibly difficult to find for the past few years.
In a shocking move back in late 2022, Starz actually renewed Dangerous Liaisons for a second season ahead of its premiere—only to reverse that decision and abruptly cancel it just a few weeks later while the first season was still airing. To make matters worse, Starz scrubbed the series entirely from its streaming app in early 2023 as part of a brutal cost-cutting tax write-off measure, leaving the show effectively homeless.
Now, almost four years later, the ill-fated drama is getting a second lease on life thanks to Netflix, but could Netflix save it? Don’t get your hopes up. Similar renewal hopes came after Netflix picked up the streaming license to Heels a couple of years ago, although we just saw that show leave, killing all hope it might return for more. Netflix last saved Manifest, and that felt like a fluke rather than a norm going forward, but never say never.
That said, it’s chances are extra slim given that Netflix UK is currently developing a new series of its own with Nicôle Lecky. Deadline announced it incredibly early in development, so no guarantee it’ll ever release.
Netflix Continues to License Lionsgate/Starz Shows
As we noted in our recent coverage of Blindspotting, Dangerous Liaisons is part of a massive ongoing licensing arrangement between Netflix and Lionsgate/Starz. Over the past couple of years, Netflix US has been aggressively padding its domestic library with titles from the premium cabler.
Other major Starz titles that have made the jump recently include the massive 50 Cent-produced hit Power, the critically acclaimed crime thriller Hightown, and the beloved comedy Party Down.
Keep in mind that these licensing arrangements are usually temporary. Based on the windows we’ve tracked for previous Starz pickups (like the recently departed Heels and Black Sails), Dangerous Liaisons will likely be available on Netflix US for exactly two years before rotating back off. (Also, as a reminder, this pickup only applies to Netflix in the United States).
