It’s officially time to head back to the summer—and the freezing winter—of 1985. Quielty and as part of Netflix’s September 2026 preview, the streamer has officially announced that the hit animated spinoff Stranger Things: Tales from ’85 will return for Season 2 on September 17th, 2026 which is strongly expected to be the final season.
Fans of the animated spinoff haven’t had to endure the usual agonizing Stranger Things wait times between seasons. Tales from ’85 originally premiered on Netflix in April 2026, instantly winning over subscribers with its Saturday morning cartoon aesthetic and stellar performances (check out our deep dive into the show’s fantastic voice cast here!).
In late April 2026, Netflix confirmed that a second season had long been in production and would be hitting our screens in the back half of 2026. The show struggled viewership-wise, especially given it’s Netflix’s flagship IP, appearing in the Netflix top 10s for only 2 weeks and logging 23.9 million viewing hours and 4.9 million views.
What to Expect from Stranger Things: Tales from ’85 Season 2
Releasing on September 17th, 2026, the second season will pick up following the jaw-dropping events of the Season 1 finale.
The official logline for season 2 reads: “With Valentine’s Day on the way, the gang must uncover the truth behind ghostly apparitions and a swarm of strange creatures causing chaos around town.”
Here is a quick refresher on where we left off and what’s coming next:
-
A Demogorgon Flower?: After our crew defeated the mutated Horde Queen (and the misguided, green-goo-wielding Daniel Fischer) by trapping her in the gate, things seemed peaceful. But in the final moments of the season, a glowing blue stem bursts from the Queen’s corpse in the Upside Down, unfurling to reveal the terrifying maw of a Demogorgon. Showrunner Eric Robles teased exactly what this means for Season 2: “The Demogorgon-mouthed flower that we are seeing represents the beginning of what will become a new mystery and chapter in the Stranger Things: Tales From ’85 saga.”
-
More Spores, More Monsters: As Robles explained, the new creatures in the animated series are essentially “Hawkins Lab science meets Upside Down matter.” When these creatures die, they release luminous green spores that infect organic matter throughout Hawkins. Expect Season 2 to introduce even more terrifying hybrids born from these spores.
-
The Baxters Are Staying: Good news for fans of the show’s newest additions! Nikki (Odessa A’zion) and her passionate biology teacher mom, Mrs. Baxter (Janeane Garofalo), are officially unpacking their boxes and staying in Hawkins.
-
A New Party Member: With the Horde Queen defeated, the crew has gotten back to their D&D roots, and Nikki has officially joined the campaign with a custom LEGO figure that is part bard, part berserker.
-
More Screen Time for El: Eleven (Brooklyn Davey Norstedt) is going to have plenty of time to play D&D with her friends next season, as Hopper (Brett Gipson) has finally extended her curfew!
We can expect a full trailer for Season 2 to drop sometime in the coming weeks, but we do have three new stills featured at the top and bottom of this article, and we’ll be keeping our main preview for Stranger Things: Tales from ’85 Season 2 updated with all the latest news, casting updates, and teasers as soon as we get them.
Of course, Stranger Things just recently celebrated its 10th anniversary. It’s hard to believe it’s been a full decade since the Duffer Brothers first introduced us to Eleven, Mike, Dustin, Lucas, and the terrifying Upside Down back in July 2016. To celebrate the milestone, Netflix has been pulling out all the stops for “Stranger Things at 10.” Between the surprise release of a VHS special edition of the first season and our own retrospective on the legacy of Netflix’s sci-fi phenomenon, nostalgia for Hawkins is at an absolute fever pitch.
