The Miracle Club Sets Netflix Svod Debut

Netflix has just confirmed it’ll be the streaming home in the US for The Miracle Club, the period drama starring Laura Linney, Kathy Bates, and Maggie Smith. The movie will mark its SVOD debut (the first time it’s been available as part of a streaming subscription service) on Wednesday, March 27th, 2024.

The central plot of the movie, set in the late 1960s, follows a group of three working-class women from Dublin, Ireland, going on a pilgrimage to Lourdes in France despite some objection from their local priest. Rounding out the cast of the film beyond the three main stars includes Agnes O’Casey, Mark O’Halloran, and Mark McKenna.

Thaddeus O’Sullivan directs the movie with Jimmy Smallhorne behind the script.

Reviews were mostly positive following the initial release of the movie back in July 2023 with the RottenTomatoes critic score currently sitting at 66% and the audience score even better with an 83% as of the time of publishing.

David Sexton for the New Statesman said about the movie in his review, “The great treat is to have another chance to spend some time with Smith, beyond Downton or Alan Bennett. She is, in her quasi-paralytic way, transfixingly wonderful, the smallest twitches and downturns conveying so much experience and contempt.”

The release date only currently applies to Netflix US, although other regions may pick up the movie in the years to come. The distribution rights for this film are a little fragmented, with Sony owning it in the US, Lionsgate owning distribution in the UK, and plenty of other distributors involved elsewhere. Sony first acquired the movie rights in multiple regions in March 2023.

Once The Miracle Club joins Netflix, it’ll join many other Sony Picture Classics titles currently streaming on Netflix US. Sadly, films from the label haven’t come quite as quickly as main Sony titles that have been dropping in the first window on Netflix, but there’s now a good collection on the service. Other streaming titles from SPC include The Persian Version, Shortcomings, Living, The Son, and Hallelujah: Leonard Cohen, A Journey, and A Song. Some titles from the past few years haven’t sadly hit Netflix, however.

All Sony movies stream on Netflix for a period of 18 months before departure.
