Charlie Hunnam is shedding more light on the “Sons of Anarchy” meta spin-off he’s developing at FX — and telling us what it’s not.
“All I can say is that it’s definitely not Season 8 of ‘Sons of Anarchy,'” Hunnam tells The Hollywood Reporter in a new interview. “It’s the same group of actors, but we are all playing ourselves, going on a mad adventure, and coming together after 10 years apart, although maintaining deep friendship in that time.”
In the new limited series, titled “Legends,” Hunnam plays a fictionalized version of himself, joined by his co-stars on the long-running FX motorcycle drama like Ron Perlman, Katey Sagal, Maggie Siff, Mark Boone Junior, Tommy Flanagan, Kim Coates, and Theo Rossi. The idea for the show was “really born out of me having several dreams over a period of time about us all being back together,” Hunnam explains. “Obviously, something in my subconscious was yearning for that experience, to have another creative process with that group of people that I loved. So I wrote something that would allow that to happen.”
Legends will offer a new spin of the Sons of Anarchy legacy
“Legends,” described as a “meta-thriller,” was first announced last month by FX. The official logline reads: “When the cast of ‘Sons of Anarchy’ reunites at a fan convention after more than a decade, the line between life and art blurs as the fractured brotherhood finds itself up against a real-world threat more dangerous than anything they ever faced in their show.” “Sons” alum Charlie Hunnam developed the series and will star as well.
“When Charlie brought us this inspired idea, we instantly sparked to his bold and entertaining vision,” FX Entertainment President Nick Grad said in a statement. “Charlie’s talents are on full display as a writer, performer, and executive producer, leading the real-life brotherhood on an adventure that is both a love letter to the series and a fun meta twist on what fans think they know.”
“Sons of Anarchy” ran on FX from 2008 to 2014, following the goings-on — many of them illegal — within the SAMCRO motorcycle club in Charming, California. Hunnam’s Jax Teller started the series as SAMCRO’s vice president (under his stepfather, Ron Perlman’s Clay, as president), but later rose to become president and manage the club’s criminal enterprise.
