Is Gabriel Leaving ‘Emily in Paris’?

Emily in Paris Season 5 already stirred up buzz about Gabriel even before the season dropped. 

After the official teaser trailer dropped, fans were caught off guard by a “wild” storyline—a possible romantic connection between Mindy (Ashley Park) and Emily’s ex-boyfriend, Alfie (Lucien Laviscount). 

However, another moment caught fans by surprise, as it seems like Emily’s other romantic interests from the past several seasons, Gabriel (Lucas Bravo), is plotting his exit. 

It started around the : 53-second mark, as Mindy arrived from Shanghai, telling Emily, “You know the saying, ‘you can’t go home again?’ Well, you can. It’s leaving that’s the hard part.”

The scene has nothing to do with Gabriel, but it sets the stage for the next moment in the trailer, which shows Emily running seemingly to meet with the Michelin-starred chef, who later says in a scene as the two are dining at a restaurant, “But now I’m excited for the future. I think you should be, too.”

Fans then see Emily seemingly sending Gabriel off, as they share a hug at the train station.

And now we know exactly what all of that meant.

In Emily in Paris Season 5, Gabriel took Sylvie’s advice after coming to Rome to get his girl, only to see Emily locking lips with Marcello Muratori and realizing that she’s happy, which is all he’s ever wanted for her. 

Paired with Sylvie’s suggestion to let go for now, Gabriel did just that. And when Emily returned to Paris, following her disastrous Roman adventure, she attempted to help Gabriel make changes on the menu at the restaurant by hiring him to cook for an event to make Antoine jealous.

Except that Gabriel did his job a little too well, with the billionaire hiring the chef to work on his yacht. 

Miserable in Paris—Gabriel’s words–he jumped at the adventure, leaving his life behind to sail around the world and work on his culinary craft.

A month into his journey, he reconnected with Emily during a stop in Paris, revealing that he was pleased with his decision. It felt as though writers were finally done trying to make Emily and Gabriel happen, with the storyline coming to an organic finish; however, the finale scenes in the season reveal that maybe things aren’t over between them after all.

Sylvie tells Gabriel that Emily is officially single again, and this time, he takes it as a hint to act quickly, extending an invitation for her to meet him in Greece. Is this finally where she’ll find true love? Or is their history simply too complicated?

It’s possible the creative forces behind the show had to pivot Gabriel’s storyline following comments he made earlier this year, where he revealed he wasn’t pleased with the trajectory of his character’s storyline.

While speaking with IndieWire last fall, Bravo noted, “The ‘sexy chef’ was very much part of me in season 1 and we grew apart season after season because of the choices he makes and because of the direction they make him take,” he said, adding, “I’ve never been so far away from him.”

“In season 1, there was a lot of me in him. But as they made him kind of unaware of his surroundings, of the dynamic, always victimizing and always being completely lost in translation and oblivious to anything that is happening around him and being manipulated by everyone, it kind of became not fun for me to shoot or to see a character I love so much and brought me so much, being slowly turned into guacamole,” he further expressed.

There was plenty of concern about Bravo’s character’s future following the comments, with the show creator Darren Starr later revealing that it was all a “misunderstanding.”

“I think the latter, just a misunderstanding. I think he was never intending not to come back,” he noted, per Deadline. 

Thankfully, Gabriel isn’t leaving the show for good, though his screentime did get reduced significantly this season, with the break from being so tapped into Emily’s chaotic lifestyle helping to mend fences between them. It was necessary, no matter where they end up.
