Roswell, New Mexico Review – Dear Mama (4×04)

Reviews

Everyone is getting one step closer to the truth about the new triad on Roswell, New Mexico Season 4 Episode 4.

One thing remains clear — Liz is the key to waking Jones.

Science has always played a huge role in the series, and Liz was largely responsible for disarming Jones and killing him.

Tezca, the woman we saw wandering naked in the season 3 finale, has been searching for Liz Ortecho since her arrival, and that’s likely because she needs her help awakening Jones.

Of course, in order to get to Liz, she needs to get to Max first, which is likely why she shape-shifted as Cameron in order to catch him off guard.

Honestly, these alien abilities are so deceiving even to their own kind.

Max was completely taken aback by the fact that Cam wasn’t who he said she was, and it’s unfortunate that Liz didn’t figure it out on a molecular level until it was already too late.

At the same time she figured out how to “unhide” the alien’s ectoplasm, Kyle’s trip to Xitali was fruitful as he discovered the third alien in stasis in her pod.

Hopefully, this will allow them to figure out much more about Tezca’s mission because so far, a lot remains unknown about the Triad.

Who wrote the letter to Eduardo urging him to come to Xitali? Was it Allie? Is she missing because of Tezca?

We know the Triad has a lot more information about where they come from — Oasis — than Max, Isobel, and Guerin, so they can fill in the blanks, but they aren’t exactly upstanding citizens.

At least, not Clyde anyway; he’s hard to figure out as he was first skeptical about Guerin before showing him the engineering marvel created by his mother after finding out that Guerin is actually Jones’ son.

They will literally do anything for Jones, yet they had no idea he had a kid. It makes you wonder what else they don’t know the truth about.

Bonnie is slightly more forthcoming, and her interactions with Guerin are genuine. She’s a lost soul, much like Guerin once was, which is why he connects with her so easily.

While Clyde seems to be totally on board with whatever mission Jones wants them to complete, Bonnie isn’t as convinced. She was told everything she wanted to hear in order to join them, but she’s quickly realizing that it’s not all that it’s cracked up to be. She’s acknowledging the ugly parts and the darkness alongside the fleeting beauty.

Oasis might not be an oasis after all, but the tool is reportedly the key to getting them back home to paradise.

When Bonnie went in for a kiss, well, I couldn’t exactly blame her. Guerin is cute, he’s sweet, and he just promised to protect her no matter the costs. He’s a keeper. And he totally let her down in the sweetest way possible while making all of our Malex hearts flutter!

“Completely in love” — the devotion he has to Alex!

Of course, one might call out Guerin for not realizing that poor Alex is literally missing, but in his defense, he has a lot on his plate and he did call him and leave him a voicemail. That has to count for something.

The stakes seem higher for everyone this season, including Mimi, who passed away shortly after a final goodbye with her daughter.

The fact that Mimi made it all the way to the bar to find her daughter just proves how strong their relationship was.

But what informed Mimi that it was “her time?”

Her death is shrouded in so much mystery, it’s no wonder Maria was so hard on herself after her mother’s passing. Mainly, her anger stemmed from her inability to own up to not having her powers so she felt as though she could decode her mother’s final message to her.

However, with a little guidance from Dallas, Maria was able to ease up on herself and reconnect with her intuition as a memory pointed her to her mother’s wedding album.

There, she found a drawing of a tree, which outright doesn’t make much sense, but we did see a tree when Clyde gave Guerin a glimpse of Oasis.

Is it possible that her mother is warning Maria about the triad? Or maybe that wasn’t Oasis at all. Aside from the colors, it looked rather plain. And it’s not like Guerin would know any better. Maybe all Clyde is showing is smoke and mirrors.

Either way — with her visions or without them — Maria will likely play a pivotal role in bringing this whole mystery together.

I love that everyone rallied around Maria in her time of need. Maria is such a lone wolf, but it’s nice to know you have the support when you need it. Isobel made it a priority to be there for her sister, even though she had a lot going on in her personal life.

Isobel was heartbroken about her breakup, and when Cameron asked her why she didn’t confide in Anatsa, she realized she wasn’t ready to face her biggest fear: trusting someone and opening up to them. After the betrayal she went through with Noah, it’s not surprising that Isobel put up a guard so that no one was able to hurt her again. She didn’t want to admit it, but when confronted by Cam, she couldn’t deny it.

Unfortunately, the fear also led to the loss as Isobel took too long to want to confide in Anatsa.

I think Anatsa was being a little unfair when she shrugged off Isobel’s attempt at salvaging the relationship and chose to skip town. Yes, she had every right to doubt the relationship given the up-and-down nature, but why couldn’t she just hear Isobel out when it was evident she was finally ready to share a huge piece of herself. I mean, she planned this huge romantic speech and invited her to a cave!

Anatsa’s rejection may have been painful, but it was also proof that she wasn’t ready for the truth. True love doesn’t just walk away.

Isobel needed to get there on her own terms, so if it took a little longer, Anatsa should’ve been understanding. I just hope this experience doesn’t set Isobel back again from trusting someone else with her heart. And this time, I hope she sees what’s been in front of her this whole time — a love that has been nothing but patient and supportive this whole time.

Anatsa was right, it shouldn’t be this hard, and their relationship couldn’t withstand the obstacles. With Kyle, everything feels natural and easy, so maybe we’ll see this relationship take shape soon?

What did you think of the episode? What does Tezca want? Is she leaving behind traces of her alien DNA in the victims she mind controls by inhabiting their bodies?

Is Liz’s mentor somehow connected to Tezca? And what is the Triad’s ultimate agenda? Do you have a theory about where this is all leading? Share your thoughts in the comments below!
