Roswell, New Mexico Review – Subterranean Homesick Alien (4×03)

Reviews

Relationship complications are par for the course when you’re an alien (or an alien ally) involved with a human while simultaneously trying to keep the world from finding out the truth about the supernatural.

An alien relationship with a journalist was doomed from the start. Isobel and Anatsa have always enjoyed each other’s company, but the unfortunate truth is that Anatsa was a seeker of the truth. She was willing to go wherever to find out the truth, and she would never stop pursuing the truth about the St. Elmo’s fire and the bank robberies. Even after being mindscaped by Isobel, Anatsa continued to seek out the story. She can’t help herself — it’s in her blood.

As Kyle underscored, if Isobel wanted her relationship to work out, she needed to be honest with Anatsa. Usually, I’d agree that honesty is the best policy, but I don’t think that’s the case here.

It would be a weight off of Isobel’s shoulders, sure, but if Anatsa were to confirm that alien beings exist, she would be even more compelled to write the story and bring the truth to the surface. And while I do think she loves Isobel, I think her love for journalism and exposing the truth trumps any feelings she might have for the blonde.

The truth wouldn’t save their relationship, it would hurt it in so many ways.

Anatsa is dangerous all on her own because she’s perceptive and sees more than what’s visible to the naked eye. When Kira shared with her the footage from the bank robbery, she could see it wasn’t edited because of how the light reflected, and she pinpointed Max almost immediately.

It totally would have been safer to stay with Anatsa just to keep her close and have an ear on everything that she’s discovered thus far. But that wouldn’t be fair to either woman, especially Isobel, who was already riddled with guilt that she had to use the mindscape on her girlfriend like Noah did to her. Obviously, the circumstances were different since Isobel was protecting her secret and her loved ones, but it came at the expense of another loved one, so it didn’t sit right with her.

There was no way to justify continuing the romance if she was always going to keep Anatsa in the dark and a separate entity.

Speaking of being perceptive, Anatsa also picked up on the fact that there are sparks between Kyle and Isobel. The glances she witnessed at the winery were more  “oh crap” than anything else, but there’s an undeniable connection and understanding there that’s hard to compete with. Plus, Kyle doesn’t really do a good job of hiding his pining. He has it bad for Is — anyone with eyes can see it.

I enjoyed Isobel’s relationship with Anatsa as they balanced each other out and challenged each other, but sadly, I don’t think the writers ever intended them to stay together. The relationship seems like it was solely conjured up to create obstacles more than anything, which again, isn’t fair for either woman. Hopefully, we’ll see some positivity flow from this relationship/breakup soon enough? Maybe once Isobel and the aliens finally decide to be open about their powers with the rest of the world, Anatsa can write the expose? One could only hope.

However, I am interested in Isobel pursuing her deeper feelings for Kyle down the line, as long as he’s not only considered a rebound. Isobel was broken for quite some time, so per the Preacher’s orders, she needs to five stages of grief that relationship because it was a really important one — it taught her so much that she can put to use in the future. Most importantly, date someone you know you can be completely yourself with. Isobel constantly hid the most important part of herself from Anatsa, and it was heartbreaking to see her wrestle with herself as to what she should do.

Kyle had a pretty dramatic night if you think about it. After forcing himself to move on, his date with Kira was crashed by the woman he loves, he then had to take a very drunk Kira home, and he ended the night at the lab reporting that Jones’ body had been snatched.

Poor Eduardo stood no chance against Tezca as she mind controlled him to get access to the lab.

The Triad, well most of them anyway, are deeply invested in helping Jones rise again, which isn’t great for Roswell.

The full length of the plan is unclear, but it’s definitely concerning as they are able to pull it off rather seamlessly right in front of the core group of protagonists.

Bonnie seems to be the only one with real reservations as she’s enjoying the world and Guerin’s kindness. I only hope he isn’t getting duped, but admittedly, it would be a wicked distraction. I love that Guerin has dedicated himself to this fight, but I almost wish he joined Alex to locate the alien balloons. It feels like an incomplete episode without an Alex sighting.

The one thing that’s clear is that Maria’s family remains at the center of this whole thing, even if she doesn’t have her powers at the moment.

The Triad was after a safety box deposit owned by Maria’s grandmother. While they still don’t know what the object inside is intended to do, Maria really did them a solid by helping them retrieve it and remain one step ahead of the Triad. They needed that win to stand even the slightest chance.

Guerin can now poke around and get answers from Bonnie, while they hold a crucial piece of the puzzle that I’m guessing has the ability to resurrect Jones.

And we can’t forget that Maria’s mom has gone missing from the facility again. It can’t be a coincidence that it happens on the same night as the robberies. Also, that facility definitely needs to tighten up security!

I genuinely enjoyed Maria’s heart-to-heart with Dallas. I’m picking up on some chemistry between them, and if there’s anyone that could help her get her powers back naturally, it’s Dallas. Dallas also has intense chemistry with Jenna, so if Gregory does eventually come back, I know that I can also confidently ship Maria and Dallas in their respective relationships.

She won’t be able to keep the truth from Liz and Max for long. And while I know Maria doesn’t want to bother them with the news, Liz deserves to know so she could find a potential cure.

Liz and Max both had to step out of their comfort zone in order to ensure that they made progress on catching the Triad.

Liz had to trust Shivani, her new mentor, and Allie’s wife, who informed her that she was studying alien things in hopes of finding a cure for her ill daughter. Meanwhile, Max had to allow Guerin to make the call about how they would handle the Triad once they successfully captured them. Though locking them away would be safe, it wasn’t the most effective approach, which is hard for a cop to unlearn, naturally. If they stand any chance at catching the Triad and stopping Jones in this next phase of the plan, they’re going to have to push the boundaries on what they’re capable and comfortable with doing.

And that goes for everyone.

What did you think of the episode? Will Bonnie tell Guerin everything she knows? Should Liz trust Shivani?

Are Kyle and Isobel going to realize their feelings for each other exceed the friendship category?
