‘The Summer I Turned Pretty’ Movie Has Major Update — Everything We Know

- Advertisment -

Pack your bags because it’s time to head back to Cousins Beach.

Shortly after The Summer I Turned Pretty wrapped up its three-season run, fans got hit with a dose of incredible news—an official movie was in the works.

While there wasn’t a premiere date revealed at the time of the announcement, there’s now been a major movie update.

The Summer I Turned Pretty Movie Filming

The Summer I Turned Pretty movie will begin filming this month!

On April 27, Lola Tung, Christopher Briney and Gavin Casalegno are set to start to start filming in Wilmington, NC, reprising their roles as Belly, Conrad and Jeremiah Fisher, per Deadline.

When Will The Summer I Turned Pretty Movie Premiere?

Currently, there’s no premiere date, but the fact that they’ve started filming means that it’s not going to be an extremely long wait.

With the theme of Christmas playing a role in Belly and Conrad’s relationship throughout the years, it would be ideal to release it during winter 2026; however, that has not been confirmed.

In fact, writer Jenny Han, who is responsible for the novels of the same name, seemingly said it’s not possible to turn it around that quickly, telling TheWrap’s Power Women Summit on December 2, “I know that everyone hoped that it was coming out this Christmas, but that’s unfortunately not happening, not possible.”

She previously told Today in 2025 (following the third and final season finale):  “We don’t know when it’s coming out, not next year. We still have to make it.”

If they don’t finish filming and editing in time for winter, an early 2027 release, or even summer 2027, is also an option!

The Summer I Turned Pretty Movie Pay Drama Explained

Filming hasn’t even begun yet, but there’s already drama associated with the TSITP film when it comes to how much money everyone will take home. As excited as I am for a movie, I hate that this might taint the legacy—so maybe some things are better left alone?

Deadline revealed that the core cast, including Tung, Briney, Casalegno, Sean Kaufman and Rain Spencer are dealing with a salary issue.

The source noted that the main trio made anywhere from $35,000-$40,000 per episode in the earlier season, but began renegotiating salaries ahead of season 3, with talks “well underway” when they were asked to commit to a movie first.

Blindly agreeing to this was met with “resistance,” per the source, but they were told it was the only way to get salary bumps, which they all did. While the studio alleges everyone was on board, there are discrepancies about how everyone felt about the whole thing.

It’s reported that Tung was getting about $100,000 per episode, with the movie bringing “three episodic fees” so about $300,000, which is a pretty small sum for a famous actress leading a movie with an already established fanbase and guaranteed views. They may not have been known stars before the series, but they’re definitely household names now—and one of the main reasons the series was such a roaring success.

Further reports allege that they were denied salary increases upon request, so there may not be any promotional runs for the film if the behind-the-scenes drama continues during the three-month filming.

What Is The Summer I Turned Pretty Movie Plot About?

Many fans hope that there will be some moments from the book that did not make the cut for Season 3. Much of the third and final season focused on Belly’s decision to finally pick a Fisher brother. Spoiler alert, she finally picked Conrad Fisher, ending the love triangle between the brothers once and for all.

Fans were pretty disappointed that we didn’t get Belly and Conrad’s wedding, with many thinking that the moment would happen in the movie.

While nothing has been confirmed or denied yet, Han previously told the Today show that there “is another big milestone for Belly.”

“There is another big milestone left in Belly’s journey, and I thought only a movie could give it its proper due,” she expressed.

Naturally, the movie would also give fans insight into where everyone is in their adult lives—Conrad was studying to be a doctor, Jeremiah was pursuing a culinary career and a romance with Denise, and Taylor and Steven had plans to move to California.

A movie that brings them all back into each other’s orbit, back to Cousins, just like every summer when they were kids and teens, is only fitting. And for a wedding? Sounds like the perfect plot right there.

The account Deuxmoi teased that the film has an American Eagle brand collab again, with a lot of med/emt wardrobe requested, so Doctor Connie is likely going to be gracing our screens!

Paging Dr. Connie—ah, it has such a nice ring to it!
