Cancellations suck, but hey, at least there’s an answer, and slowly you learn to let go.
But then there’s that other category of shows that sit in the wasteland of uncertainty. They have just enough information to keep you invested but not enough follow-through — like your ex.
In this article, we look at the shows that have remained in frustrating limbo for years on end.
Those About to Die
While Spartacus remains the blueprint for Roman gladiator spectacle on television, Those About to Die came close to being a decent replacement.
The series premiered in July 2024, and while it did not receive the warmest of receptions from critics, it was a global hit.
As we approach its two-year anniversary, the fate of Those About to Die remains unknown. The last update was from director Roland Emmerich discussing the potential direction for Season 2.
Those About to Die was pure fun despite its lack of compelling characters and the overcrowded cast. Some shows take a while to find their footing, and this series could have improved in future seasons.
Peacock and its global partners have yet to make a decision, pushing the show further into that dreaded two-year wait streaming is known for.
We Are Lady Parts
This British sitcom did not just entertain; it subverted expectations with its exploration of an all-female Muslim punk band.
It was full of spirit and musicality for two seasons, but since the last one aired in May 2024, its fate has remained unknown.
We need to know what happens to Amina and the rest of the gang, but there have been no updates about Season 3 from Channel 4 or Peacock.
Pachinko
This sprawling multi-generational saga about a Korean family will break your heart and heal it in the same episode.
The drama series created by Soo Hugh is a period piece with amazing visuals and costume design, as well as a thrilling storyline.
The latest season aired in August 2024, but there have been no updates, even with Hugh saying the series was meant to tell a three-season story.
Apple TV has expressed support for the series, but has not made a decision over a year later.
Every story deserves a happy ending, and Pachinko‘s fans could use one.
Monsieur Spade
Clive Owen, southern France, and cigarettes? What’s not to like in this neo-noir thriller that arrived with a chill bang in January 2024 and was never heard from again?
Monsieur Spade was conceived as a limited series, but executive producer Tom Fontana hinted there might be more.
The last update was in August of the same year, when Fontana said they were in discussions with AMC and AMC+, but that it was “moving at a glacial pace.”
Taboo
Tom Hardy can do anything, movies and television. One of his finest works is in the gritty crime drama Taboo, which aired on FX in 2017.
The series was renewed for Season 2 nine years ago, but there has been no progress since.
The latest update came last year, when Hardy said a second season is still in the works but had to take a back seat because he was involved with the Venom films.
Nine years is a long time; Hardy has sustained injuries from all his action-oriented roles. Unless FX plans on recasting, the longer wait could kill the series.
Condor
Max Irons dazzled in this 2018 espionage thriller. The series was unrelenting in Season 1, and even if Season 2 fumbled, redemption is always possible.
Condor may have fallen victim to shifting networks as it went through several before landing on Epix — and then it was also renamed MGM+.
Epix renewed it for Season 3 in 2022, but that’s the extent of the information available about the season.
MGM+ has yet to decide on it, even as the streamer gains acclaim for shows like FROM.
Condor needs this chance to redeem itself, and like Taboo, a lot can change in eight years; Irons might not be interested in the physicality the character demands.
Superpumped
Behind every disruptive tech is an incredible story that users might never know unless they watch Superpumped.
The anthology series premiered in 2022, and the first season focused on Uber’s rise in the rideshare space.
Showtime renewed it for Season 2, planned to focus on the rise of Facebook, but that season never saw the light of day.
With the network folding into the larger Paramount ecosystem, it remains to be seen whether anyone there will be pumped for Season 2.
And look, there is no better time than now to take a look at Facebook, given its never-ending legal and moral troubles — the very same thing that marred its start.
Honorable Mention:
Anansi Boys
While this project never aired, it remains quite interesting for fans of American Gods.
The television adaptation of Neil Gaiman’s infamous trickster went through all stages of a TV show’s cycle.
However, despite being filmed over three years ago, the series never saw the light of day after Gaiman was accused of sexual assault.
The show’s fate remains unknown, even as rumors have swirled that the series will be released, with Fall 2026 speculated as the release window.
