American Horror Story’s Obvious Fiona Reunion Isn’t Worth What It Just Did to Cordelia

- Advertisment -

When American Horror Story Season 13 got underway with some of the worst episodes in series history — yes, even worse than American Horror Story Season 12, “Delicate” — it seemed like the series had found its floor.

Then, American Horror Story Season 13 Episode 6 happened.

The witch-heavy installment found ghosts from American Horror Story Season 5, “Hotel,” showing up at Miss Robichaux’s Academy to terrorize the witches.

The witches saved the world from the Antichrist on American Horror Story Season 8, “Apocalypse,” so it makes sense that they would be public enemy number one with a new uprising from the Devil in the works.

The episode concluded with James March brutally murdering Cordelia — the Supreme, I implore the writers to remember.

Did the writers just sort of forget how powerful a witch Cordelia is?

It’s atrocious writing like this that’s undermining American Horror Story’s latest attempt at a crossover season.

Cordelia’s power faded in the past when the threat of Michael was rising, but there have been no tell-tale signs of that happening on American Horror Story Season 13.

All we’ve had of the witches so far is very little substance and a whole lot of bizarre one-liners.

American Horror Story is Making Big Mistakes

It’s embarrassing that, even with a shorter runtime, American Horror Story is butchering what could have been a big comeback season.

My best guess is that the writers want Cordelia to meet her mother, Fiona, in the afterlife and for them to find their way back to the real world before it’s too late.

Fiona was a big adversary on American Horror Story Season 3, “Coven,” and it’s a big deal bringing the character back into the land of the living.

Since she was wicked in many ways, it would make sense to give Cordelia and Fiona a two-hander that establishes how crucial they are to preventing the rising threat of Mr. Nas.

But did we really need to undermine Cordelia’s power to get there?

If there’s a reveal down the line that Cordelia allowed herself to die to find her mother in the afterlife, I’m willing to eat crow, but I can only go on what the series has shown me so far.

And what it’s shown me is the Supreme being outsmarted and killed by a ghost without putting up anything close to the fight we’ve come to expect from her.

For characters meeting for the first time in 13 years, it should feel monumental, but thanks to how Cordelia’s power has, once again, been undermined, it reeks of desperation.

Can Cordelia’s Death Make Sense?

Historically, American Horror Story seasons start off well enough and quickly fall apart when it becomes obvious the show is trying to juggle too much with not enough throughput.

American Horror Story Season 13 started terribly and has remained terrible.

We’re about to hit the halfway point, and unless things start clicking into place, it’s going to go down as one of the biggest disappointments in recent memory.

I can’t fathom how the legendary cast signed on for a season that feels fundamentally hollow.

Sarah Paulson is playing multiple characters, and the majority of hers have been used as sacrifices.

I don’t get why anyone would think that would be a good use of her in the story, but hey, I don’t make these decisions.

The good news is that Paulson and Jessica Lange work very well together, bringing the fraught mother-daughter dynamic of Cordelia and Fiona to life.

That’s reason enough to look forward to the next episodes.

But if American Horror Story really did tear Cordelia down just to get her into the same room as Fiona, that reunion has one hell of a mess to clean up.
