Best Medicine appeals to viewers because it differs from other shows. It’s not a typical medical drama or procedural.
The series infuses both of those at times, but at its core, it focuses on the relationships between the Port Wenn residents.
We’ve come to enjoy the warmth, chaos, and hilarity between them, so it hurt when outsiders scammed them.
I love how the series plays on the titles of books, so Best Medicine Season 1 Episode 12 dealt with Port Wenn gaining a sister city and welcoming Norwegian representatives.
Only Martin was suspicious of them, and I’ve grown tired of the fact that no one trusts his judgment until it’s too late.
I also loved that Best Medicine has continued to feature the aftermath of the love triangle, and how it’s affected Mark, especially. He’s got more emotional layers than anyone thought.
Don’t Always Trust First Impressions
Martin never enjoys Port Wenn’s traditions, but I wouldn’t like it if someone added flags to my house or office without permission.
It is adorable that Louisa always ropes him into participating by adding that he fits the part. This time, he looked distinguished enough to greet the Norwegians.
Ludvig and Sigrid charmed everyone, but Martin. They got Geneva to sign a contract and led a fun Norwegian dance at the Salty Breeze.
Sigrid had everyone fooled with how emotional she got after Peter gifted her his class project. She seemed to gush over the future of children and strong women, enchanting Louisa and Sarah.
Martin refused to fall under that spell, even overhearing them talking about scamming his friends. He might not love Port Wenn, but he cares about the residents.
The Aftermath of the Love Triangle Showed Mark’s Layers
Mark took Martin’s betrayal harder than I thought. Sadly, I assumed the Norwegians added drugs to those pastries he kept inhaling, not that he was drunk.
Everyone assumed the worst of Mark since he kept falling over, starting fights, and eating more than usual.
I’ve never seen him erupt at everyone, concerning both Martin and Louisa. He almost ran over Louisa, making him feel guilty and realize he sounded like one of his suspects, whom he often arrests.
Even when Mark let Martin check him over, he maintained he could only contact him about his labs. Mark had not let things go because he followed the rules.
That’s why he arrested himself in a cell and ran away to his treehouse because he couldn’t face being an alcoholic and hurting people.
I loved Mark’s excitement that he had Auto Brewery Syndrome instead, and that condition caused his blood alcohol to spike as well as his carb cravings.
He returned to loveable Mark when he realized he didn’t have alcoholism. Mark, Louisa, and Martin have been an interesting triangle, but I prefer them as genuine friends. He’s a happy man who missed his best buds.
I Don’t Trust Martin’s Ex
There was no denying it. Martin and Louisa still sizzle, and she still wanted him.
You could tell by the expectant look as she waited for him to state his intentions.
Martin is a great guy, but he’s horrible at romance. He meant well, offering the name of a fertility specialist, but I suspect Louisa would have rather had him.
Dr. Montgomery seemed like a shark, which could be because she wanted Martin for herself and didn’t believe he’d be happy in a small town.
I also couldn’t get the image of Eliza Coupe playing a serial killer on The Hunting Party out of my head. While she’s not a killer, Dr. Mongomery seemed territorial and wasn’t afraid to cross boundaries.
She wasn’t afraid to insinuate that Louisa messed up her schedule, and I hated her attitude about fertility.
If she’s going to be that kind of doctor, she needs to use sensitivity, not ridicule them for waiting to have a baby.
What doctor asks patients about their personal lives? It’s like she knew Louisa may have dated Martin, and she wanted to scare her away and stake her claim.
There’s Always Time to Change
I think Martin craved a loving relationship like George and Greg had. Am I the only one who already assumed they were married?
Those two are the heart of Port Wenn and know how to laugh at stupid things, like Greg sleeping and eating the cake toppers off the top of their frozen wedding cake.
That’s the type of marriage most people long for. But almost everyone, including Louisa, kept calling Martin too uptight and negative.
The only person who loved Martin for himself was Peter. It was endearing but concerning that the young boy referred to Martin as his father.
However, he looked up to Martin since the doctor had been the only person to show up for him.
Martin continued to be the only adult who spent time with Peter, including showing up at a school presentation or letting him spend time with Copernicus.
Peter was lonely, and Martin understood that. It warmed my heart that Peter trusted Martin and thought he shouldn’t change, since Peter was geeky and got ridiculed, too.
Besides Martin and Louisa, Martin and Peter have become my favorite relationship, and I love how he’s softened Martin’s edges.
I’m Not Surprised By Who Helped the Norwegians Backstab the Locals
It seemed a bit too convenient that a small Norwegian town suddenly wanted to become “sister cities” with Port Wenn.
Ludvig and Sigrid seemed too good to be true, even when Martin saw Ludvig sneaking in and out of the Salty Breeze freezer.
While Martin is a competent doctor, he excelled at his detective work, learning that the Norwegians were surveying the bay and using a drone to study the seafood.
They never cared about getting to know the Port Wenn residents; they only wanted to reap the benefits of creating a salmon farm.
Poor Geneva looked crushed, and she was even more devastated when she learned she had already signed the paperwork, which included an economic development clause.
I’m not surprised Glendon helped them. He’s always been more concerned with profits and the bottom line than with highlighting the town’s charming beauty.
No wonder he wanted to get the Norwegians alone and wanted the rest of the town council aside. It’s going to be war.
The others won’t take this lying down. Will the council defeat the Norwegians and Glendon?
