Best Medicine’s Season 2 Premiere Explored a Missing Mermaid, a Chain-Smoker, and Port Wenn’s Quirky Charm

Welcome back to Best Medicine and Port Wenn, the town full of quirky residents.

We’ve missed Best Medicine. Most medical shows are serious, and Best Medicine’s cases typically include weird and relatable issues.

This lets viewers enjoy the characters’ lightheartedness, appreciate their quirks, and learn about some new medical issues.

The Best Medicine Season 2 premiere picked up a few months after all the cliffhangers. It showed how Martin functioned under pressure with a monitor watching his every move, and how much Eden had changed his life.

We also learned how Louisa chose to proceed with her pregnancy, and how that will affect the love square.

But the most entertaining thing was the cases, including a missing mermaid, whom Mark connected with, and a chain-smoker, played by Andrea Martin. They were entertaining, and I hope they come back.

I Don’t Hate This Quirky Monitor, Just the Reason She’s Watching Martin

Glendon probably hoped he would eliminate Martin from Port Wenn by reporting him to the medical board, but he should have known better.

Martin hated having a monitor check his every move, but this one appeared to give him a chance.

She hadn’t found him lacking, only his snack selection. Poor Martin spent more money on keeping her fed, because he knew she controlled his fate, and he had another three months of dealing with her.

Best Medicine Season 2 Episode 1 didn’t highlight any medical emergencies where Elaine stepped in when the monitor was around, making it easier to hide his phobia.

Glendon made it clear he wouldn’t stop making Martin’s life miserable since he got such gleeful pleasure from it, so Martin needed to cooperate with the Monitor and stay ahead of Glendon.

Best Medicine Eliminated the Soapiest Part of the Love Square

I really wanted Louisa and Mark to have a baby together. Yes, it would have been messy, but messy provides drama and stories. It wrote itself.

Both Mark and Louisa admitted they’re okay on their own, but they’re afraid they won’t find someone to love again. They approach love and relationships the same way.

Mark wants someone who makes him smile uncontrollably. He used to feel that way with Louisa. While I didn’t ship them romantically, they were entertaining in each other’s orbit. It would have kept things interesting, and now we only have Eden for that.

Beyond that, I’m not sure I believe Eden actually likes Louisa. It seems more of a keep-your-rivals-nearby thing, but maybe she does respect Louisa for trying to be a single mom.

I suspect Louisa is part of the reason Eden wants Martin to move back to Boston, and the lady in question is the exact reason he wants to.

Something about that rubbed almost everyone the wrong way. She’s not necessarily mean. She’s just very exact and clinical, and not very welcoming.

I think part of it is that she wants Martin to pass his probation, and she doesn’t gel with Port Wenn.

I appreciated that Elaine went toe-to-toe with her, but I felt bad for Peter. He seemed afraid of her, and he felt neglected by Martin since she arrived.

He presented that it was about Copernicus, but Peter felt betrayed that Martin didn’t miss him. It was another person who abandoned him.

I Felt like Best Medicine Shipped the Little Mermaid with the Main Case

Best Medicine’s main case felt similar to some of Brilliant Minds‘ old cases because it seemed outlandish, and they needed to approach the mermaid with understanding, not medical jargon.

There were some Easter Eggs to The Little Mermaid, only this time, Martin saved her, instead of the mermaid saving the prince.

I loved how Mark thought she actually was a mermaid. That endeared him to her, while she grew agitated with all the medical jargon and threw water on Martin.

I suspect she hated being treated like an experiment because of her symptoms, and she wanted a real friend, and Mark was the only one who met her on her level.

This was an interesting case because she couldn’t speak properly, and she started having a seizure, in addition to her scaly legs.

Martin discovered that her elevated salt levels worsened her condition, but the mermaid kept running away. She didn’t trust doctors.

We’ve all had issues that made us different, and she felt isolated because of her skin condition. When she dressed up as a mermaid, she felt like the character. But Cecilia had been ridiculed her entire life.

Mark was the only one who paid attention to her words and her affect to realize how depressed she was. She didn’t fall off a boat. She jumped, and she looked even more depressed when no one even realized she was missing.

She needed Martin, who realized her condition, but Mark truly saved her since he understood what it’s like to be different.

Andrea Martin Was Hilarious as a Chain – Smoker

Andrea Martin was entertaining and frustrating as Judith, one of Sarah’s friends. She kept smoking even though she needed an oxygen tank.

She tried everyone’s patience, especially Martin’s. She lit up a cigarette right after he forbade her to smoke near the tank, and blew up her house.

I thought it was hilarious how Sarah frisked Judith. We’ve never seen her that fierce or two women going at it like that. Geneva acted like it was normal.

Judith needed to realize that the entire town treated her like she couldn’t be trusted when Sarah and Louisa lined up sitters for her. The teens were funny and outspoken, but probably made her want to smoke more.

Like Cecilia, Judith hated something about herself. Quitting smoking was the hardest thing she ever did, even harder than childbirth or stopping drugs.

That resonated with Martin because of his phobia, since that was likely the point.

However, we’ll never know if she merely sweet-talked him or if she meant it since she hid one final cigarette in her bra and blew up Sarah’s guest bedroom, too.

No wonder no one wanted Judith to stay with them.

Everyone Hates Something About Themselves

We can all relate to Cecilia, who thought no one liked her because of her scaly legs. She felt betrayed when she jumped off the party boat, and none of her friends came looking for her.

It seemed like her friends cared more about partying than getting to know her, and she felt overwhelmed by everyone’s kindness in Port Wenn, thinking they were insincere.

It’s why she hid up in the lighthouse. She didn’t trust them, and she still contemplated jumping. Martin told her that everyone dislikes something about themselves.

I loved how Geneva burst in, partly to help and partly to prevent Martin from spilling his secret. This was my favorite part, as each person admitted their embarrassing secrets, from Geneva admitting to a crime to hide her divorce to Elaine hiding her college rejection.

Even though Mark had his heart broken, he’s still friends with Louisa, but they didn’t want to make things weird again by having a baby together. I appreciated how they’re both scared that they’ll never find that fairytale again.

It was appropriate to keep referring to fairytales when they featured a mermaid, since she assumed they were strange. I loved how she made Mark smile, though, and hope she appears again.

It took guts for Martin to admit his blood phobia to everyone finally, but I’m glad he did since now Glendon can’t hold anything over his head.

Most of his friends didn’t even seem fazed, except Aunt Sarah, who was hurt that he didn’t confide in her. 

I think being honest will be the first step towards him and Louisa growing closer again since it showed Martin letting his guard down around others, and that’s important to her.

Other Best Medicine Buzz

Sarah and Bert have caught so many sea urchins that it’s affecting the rest of Port Wenn. They’re storing them next to the school, which stinks.

The Salty Breeze was busier than ever, which was a double-edged sword. There’s never been lines like that, and Greg and George were overwhelmed.

Al would still barely speak to his dad, because Bert has had his adoption from him for 18 years. While I understand his hurt, it’s a bit extreme. Bert loves Al more than anything and will be brutal if Al leaves for college while they’re estranged.

I doubt Al will leave. He wants Elaine to go with him since he thinks it will be romantic. While she agreed, she’s finally the face of Port Wenn, and she got certified to draw blood legally for Dr. Best.

She has a life here, and I suspect she doesn’t want to leave.
