When I read the description for Cape Fear Season 1 Episode 6, and it stated that “the family takes a trip,” I was curious for several reasons.
It would make sense for the Bowdens to hotfoot it out of their home now that Max Cady is living right across the road from them.
So, you can only imagine the look on my face when I realized that this “trip” was more of an acid trip.

Cape Fear really is one of those shows where doom scrolling just isn’t possible while watching.
Everything that happens is so mesmerizing, unnerving, and, frankly, batshit crazy.
Few shows have surprised me in the last few years. Most are so by the numbers that you can predict exactly where they’re headed.
Cape Fear isn’t one of them, and that’s a big part of why it continues to command my attention. I’m here for the slow unraveling of the Bowdens.

They present themselves as the perfect family, but behind closed doors, they’re anything but, and I’m genuinely concerned about where we’ll leave them by the time Cape Fear Season 1 wraps.
The only way out is through at this point, and I’m starting to think their only chance of escaping Max’s clutches is by going on the run.
Max Has Everyone Right Where He Wants Them on Cape Fear
Max has been this uneasy presence all season long, but he’s kept cool, calm, and collected with the Bowdens until now.
He’s been meticulously immersing himself in their lives and causing unrest at every turn, and despite their best efforts, Anna and Tom have been unable to prove it.

Max has had 17 years to perfect and fine-tune his revenge plan, and if the way he killed the prisoner who let him take that brutal beating is any indication, he’s just getting started with Anna and Tom.
You could tell when they showed up at his house that he was itching to say something, but instead, he made them feel even more uneasy by stealing their cat and renaming it.
Any normal person would have handed the cat over, but not Max. He laughed at them, called the cat “Peanut Butter,” and refused to acknowledge the name they’d given it.
That’s a power move, but I figured that would be enough for him to stop short of letting the mask fully slip and telling Anna and Tom what he truly wanted from them.

There seemed to be a sense of relief in both of them when Max finally listed some demands.
Remember how he was praising Anna’s skills as a lawyer on Cape Fear Season 1 Episode 3? That admiration always felt calculated, and now we’re seeing what was really simmering beneath the surface.
It also can’t be a coincidence that Tom’s life at work is falling apart now that Max is back on the scene. There’s no other rhyme or reason for everything happening at once.
Max has got to be masterminding this whole thing because it’s no surprise that everything is going south the moment he returns.

The issue is that he’s going about this all the wrong way, and I’m starting to think he’s fully prepared to die if it means getting vengeance on the Bowdens.
He’s already been pulling the strings with Natalie and Zack. I still don’t know how Nevaeh fits into his master plan, but that chick is somehow even crazier than he is.
The way she attacked Tom after he went through the hole in the wall, and then put her hand through it after Anna concluded there was nobody on the other side, was nightmare fuel.
Given that everyone was high as a kite on acid, her behavior somehow made as much sense as anything else.

The fight with Nevaeh was pure horror. There was a desperation in Anna to save her family, and that was perfectly illustrated by the way she hurled that tin of paint at the back of Nevaeh’s head.
The only good thing to come from this is that Natalie is finally getting a front row seat to who the young woman who fed her lies on Cape Fear Season 1 Episode 4 really is.
Would Natalie Betray Her Parents?
But Max has already got his claws into Natalie and is sowing seeds of doubt about her parents.
Natalie is smart, but Max is well-versed in manipulation, and it seems like he’s going to get Natalie on his side before long.

There’s still so much we don’t know about what Anna and Tom did, and maybe it’ll turn out to be so bad that Natalie really does turn her back on them. I’m already side-eying them.
As for Zack, it’s been clear since the series premiere that he’s already been coerced into doubting everything about his parents.
Nevaeh and, probably, Max took advantage of his loneliness to pursue their own vendettas.
Cape Fear Season 1 Episode 6 reset the board heading into the final four episodes, and every piece now feels exactly where Max wants it.

How much crazier can things possibly get? I honestly have no idea anymore, and that’s exactly why I’m strapped in for the ride.
