CIA Season 1 Episode 5 brings a story that’s a little too close to home, given the world’s current situation, and it doesn’t quite do it justice.
Everything is a little too neat and easy to guess, which has already become a problem for the CIA.
Outside of the case, we get to spend some time at Colin’s home, seeing just how perfect his life definitely isn’t.
Nobody Gets in the Way of a Job
As we start to learn that the couple performing the attacks is part of an Iranian sleeper cell.
This is the second time that CIA has chosen to run a sleeper cell being woken in the last few episodes, and while this is a huge part of espionage, there are more storylines to play with.
However, this episode certainly hits a little harder with what’s going on in the world today, especially as we get the plot device of the Iranians learned that the DOD had taken steps to take down Iran’s nuclear capabilities.
Dick Wolf shows are all about ripped from the headlines, though, and that includes the FBI universe. Why am I surprised CIA would follow suit?
What this whole episode shows is that nobody gets in the way of a job.
While the pet is considered with care and passed on to someone who will look after it, the terrorist couple has no issue with killing children to get to their targets.
What a way to open the episode with that explosion, though! Who didn’t wish they could reach through the screen to pull the young girl back?
People like this are some of the most dangerous. They believe in the cause they’re fighting for, and nothing except death is going to stop them.
The problem is the CIA and FBI have to get to them first, and there’s only so much they can do when they’re on the back foot.
While the terrorist couple had some well-thought-out plans when it came to handling their targets, they slipped up with getting their fake Canadian passports.
Wouldn’t you get them first before enacting a plan that would gain attention?
It’s small elements like this — and like Bill going to touch the laptop that was left behind — that make me question some of the writing.
Characters should be smarter than this, and the cases should be much harder to predict!
Colin’s Life Is Less Than Perfect
When we first found out about Colin’s secret life, it looked like he had the perfect one. His wife and son were waiting for him at home.
CIA Season 1 Episode 5 is quick to prove us wrong. Colin’s job is causing problems, and to make it worse, he can’t even tell his family what he’s really doing.
That has to be hard on the families, and we only get a small glimpse of that.
Colin has been an unreliable father because of his work, and it’s a story many CIA agents share.
While it’s an admirable job, I have to question whether it’s right to then put others’ lives in turmoil because of his secretive work.
At least Delta Force and SEALs will tell their families what they’re doing, even if they can’t say when they’re leaving or where they’re going.
CIA agents have to come up with a believable cover to take them on the road at the last minute, which makes them look flaky.
And I stand by this even with the fun twist that we get at the end, just as I was getting flashbacks of Criminal Minds.
Not only is there a quick mention that Colin is not the biological father, but his secret girlfriend is connected to an international firm that hires spies.
So, who is lying to whom? What is the endgame for both Colin and Sarah?
Colin is great at lying, and I’m sure that’s what happened when he told Sarah about some woman he lost.
We haven’t gotten to know his tells yet, which certainly gives us a lot to play with and theorize.
I’m sure a lot of this episode is a red herring when it comes to Colin’s involvement as the mole, and our eyes should be on Sarah.
A Flash of the Mole?
Speaking of the mole, apart from the very end of the episode, Bill doesn’t spend much time focusing on the mole, and I like it.
It keeps the focus on the case of the week and gives us a chance to get to know the characters.
Bill doesn’t go around trying to look up information on computers, and he doesn’t try to sneakily ask questions.
It’s not like he can. There have been a couple of times when he’s made it clear he’s no good at undercover. The spies would easily figure out he was up to something!
That’s especially the case if the mole is the one CIA Season 1 Episode 5 hinted at.
As Gina asks Nicky about being stationed in Tehran, Nicky says she’s never been there. It’s clear that Gina is sure Nicky was once stationed there, so why lie about it?
Is it possible that Gina got the information wrong, or has Nicky told a pointless lie? Because we don’t know the characters well enough just yet, it’s hard to tell.
That’s probably the point of it all, and it’s a good thing. It leaves us guessing for longer.
The problem is that I can’t see Nicky being the mole. She and Gina are the two most obvious candidates for the mole (along with Colin), and I keep coming back to the idea that it has to be someone we’re only seeing for a few minutes at a time.
Miguel’s name keeps coming up, and he’s the one with the tech abilities. He’s the one who is most likely the mole at this point, right?
My new theory? Is it possible that Colin already knows there’s a mole, and that’s why he’s infiltrated Sarah’s life? That makes the most sense!
Overall, there have been stronger episodes than this one, but we’re still in the early days, and I’m sure many of the changes leading up to the CIA premiere have a lot to do with some of the early issues.
