Daisy Puts Her Plan Into Action on The Testaments Season 1 Episode 9

Daisy takes matters into her own hands on The Testaments.

It leads to a questionable arc, and there are certainly mixed reactions from those who learn the truth.

However, with the truth about Becka’s dad out, we all knew it was only a matter of time before something would be done.

I’m not sure any of us expected Becka to be the one to take matters into her own hands.

The Wrong Thing Done for the Right Reasons Is Still the Wrong Thing

For as long as I can remember, I’ve never believed in doing the wrong thing, even when it’s with pure intentions.

We can thank Charmed for that, dating back to the series’ second season.

However, I find myself torn when watching The Testaments, and that’s because of the Gilead regime as a whole.

Sometimes, you have to do morally gray things to get the right results.

A man like Becka’s dad isn’t a good man. He’s using his power and position to sexually assault young girls, and in some cases, they have no idea what’s actually happened.

When they tried to speak out, those in charge didn’t listen.

Aunt Vidala decided to convince Hulda and Agnes that they were “confused,” and while Aunt Lydia clearly had some sort of idea up her sleeve, she was never going to act fast enough.

So, Daisy had to act.

I did wonder, at first, why Grove wouldn’t touch Daisy, but the more I thought about it, the more it came down to two things.

1. She didn’t grow up in Gilead, so Grove didn’t know her well enough to trust her.
2. The fact that she had bad fillings and bleeding gums turned him off.

It all seems odd, but I guess even predators have their limits.

To be honest, it really does go down to trust. With girls who had grown up in Gilead, he knew they likely wouldn’t say anything out of fear of ruining their reputations.

With someone like Daisy, he wouldn’t know if she had given in to the full Gilead way of life — and clearly she hadn’t!

I would consider that the wrong thing done for the right reason is still the wrong thing had Aunt Lydia not seen right through it.

When she talks about how reckless Grove was with Daisy and how fortunate they were to have witnesses, there’s a look in her eyes that makes it clear she knows the truth.

She knows that Daisy is lying, but she also wants to find a way to bring Grove down. This has worked in her favor, as it means she can act a little faster than she was likely planning.

Not too fast, though! While she wants to bring Grove down, she can’t put Becka’s marriage at risk.

There’s a weird balance here, and I actually don’t hate Lydia for this statement she makes to Judd.

Lydia knows the nuances of this regime, and she does what she can to protect all her girls. I know we want to hate her, but I simply can’t when looking at her like this.

When Garth learns the truth, he’s understandably angry. He was genuinely worried about Daisy, but now he likely sees her as everything he’s been told girls from the outside are.

I have to question whether Garth is Mayday. There are moments when he comes across as being a double agent, someone pretending to be Mayday to flush out the “terrorists.”

However, if that was the case, he would hand Daisy over to the Eyes right away. It’s not like anyone would really know that it was him.

Becka’s Reaction to the Truth Is the Most Heartbreaking Part

While I certainly feel for Agnes and Hulda, my heart breaks for Becka throughout The Testaments Season 1 Episode 9.

She makes it clear at the beginning of the hour that Agnes is pulling away from her, and she wants to blame Daisy.

The truth is that Agnes doesn’t feel comfortable going over to Becka’s house anymore, but she just doesn’t know how to say it.

It’s only after Daisy’s actions that Grove has no choice but to share the information with Garth and Becka that she starts to put it all together.

That’s when Agnes has to open up, and Becka’s reaction is the most relatable and understandable ever.

Nobody wants to believe that their dad is a predator.

I’m willing to believe that Grove never laid a finger on his own daughter. Becka would have said something if he did.

However, it was his wording that made her realize that Agnes was telling the truth.

Did you notice how he kept saying he never touched the “Pearl Girl”? It was clear that he was guilty of other crimes, but he just didn’t know that others were “gossiping.”

I have to wonder how many other Plums-turned-Greens hadn’t spoken up when he’d done something, because there shouldn’t be many surprised looks. 

There’s no way Agnes and Hulda were the only ones, but maybe some were like Agnes and just didn’t really know.

Either way, Becka knew that there was only one thing to do.

Had it not been Agnes, I don’t think she would have fully believed anyone. There is an unbreakable bond between the two of them.

Becka killed for her love for Agnes, and that’s why she went straight over to Agnes’s house afterward.

Sure, she knows that Agnes doesn’t feel the same way romantically, but she trusts her best friend to have her back.

This is where my heart breaks even more for Becka.

She is completely splitting at the seams. Her whole world is crumbling around her, finding out about her dad, and now her best friend has seemingly betrayed her.

What she doesn’t know is that Agnes had no idea what the plan was.

At least, Garth had the decency to look guilty and sad for handing his own fiancée over to the wolves that are the Eyes. 

Becka doesn’t need imprisonment; she genuinely needs a doctor, but we know Gilead won’t see it that way.

What a way to end the penultimate episode of The Testaments Season 1. 

How can Becka get out of the situation she’s now in, and does she even want to?

Will anyone learn the truth about Daisy’s lie, and will she escape Gilead?

Will Agnes and Hulda’s reputations be damaged by the rumors?

There’s everything to play for as The Testaments gets ready to wrap its first season.

• Shunnamite’s “sketch us, it’ll last longer” comment made me chuckle. I love this girl.
• Daisy forgetting how to announce her period and just saying, “I got my period,” was the cutest thing ever, and I’m glad the Aunts just laughed.
• Aunt Estee adds another layer to the way the women are affected by Gilead.
• Judd dismissing “rumors” against Grove as idle gossip is sickening and proves it’s not about protecting the girls, but about power.
