While the past few episodes may have been a little on the slower side, Dark Winds reminds us of what stakes are truly at hand.
We’ve gotten a vague sense of how dangerous Irene truly is, but she proves herself a worthy match for Joe and the FBI’s relentless investigation.
Plus, after watching Chee’s mental and physical state slowly deteriorate over the course of the season, we finally get some answers about what’s causing his decline.
Dark Winds Season 4 Episode 6 finally shakes things up with unexpected twists and, surprisingly, a lack of Billie.
But Billie’s absence is more than made up for by the return to the juicy tension that has made the show so special.
Bern and Chee Are At A Crossroads
After the cliffhanger ending on Dark Winds Season 4 Episode 5, thankfully, Bernadette and Joe come to rescue Chee from Sonny.
Even without all the cruel beatings from Sonny, Chee is already in a terrible state, unfit to continue investigating.
The storyline about Chee’s visions is finally explicitly addressed in this episode, and Emma’s guidance offers some clarity on what we’ve been suspecting all along.
Given Emma’s own relationship with unpacking familial trauma, it makes sense that she would be able to offer the best advice to Chee on how he can work through his own trauma.
The character-building for him this season has been excellent, particularly because reckoning with his mother’s death has allowed us to understand why he has felt like an outsider to the Native community.
We’ve mostly gotten Chee’s perspective on being blindsided by Bernadette’s promotion, so it was refreshing to see her talking through how she feels about the relationship.
There’s nobody better equipped to support her than Emma.
Even though Emma hasn’t appeared frequently this season, every time she’s on screen is a delight because she carries herself with honesty and confidence.
Deanna Allison always does a great job embodying the role of Emma.
The writers have a super strong sense of her character, which is why the scene between Emma and Bernadette was one of the best moments of the season.
Her scenes with Bernadette and Chee made the episode’s shocking ending all the more tragic and set up the imperative for Chee to begin the process of spiritual healing over the last few episodes of this season.
Does Irene Deserve Sympathy?
Speaking of tragedy, we get a deeper insight into Irene’s character and motivations.
Once it’s clear that her motivation for working in such a dangerous position is to afford the care her father needs, Irene becomes a much more three-dimensional character to understand.
The show really emphasizes how Irene’s own struggles with her familial trauma influence her decision to continue perpetuating familial trauma for characters like Billie by hunting down her family members.
While this helps us sympathize with her, she definitely loses some goodwill when she finds herself in a game of cat-and-mouse with the FBI, Sonny, and Joe.
Time and time again, Irene has proved to be one of the most deadly villains of the entire Dark Winds show, proving the FBI wrong when they severely underestimate her skill.
The only piece of information that gives the authorities a leg up is her clear weakness: Joe.
It’s equally disturbing and impressive how her attraction to Joe constantly interferes with her ability to carry out her professional mission.
I’m eager to see how the detectives take her down after all the challenges she’s thrown at them.
In particular, I hope that Joe finds a way to get her to ease off his back as she continues to stalk him.
Joe Holds His Own
Joe deserves a shoutout for being a focal point in the story this week.
Of course, he’s always been the main character, but we really get to see Joe operating at his best by getting closer to finding Leroy than anyone else has after several episodes of false leads.
He proves he’s more than earned the title of Lieutenant as he uses his emotional and analytical skills to piece together the few clues and build a clearer picture of the operation’s scale.
Especially in contrast to the FBI’s reckless strategy, Joe’s ability to assess the situation and determine how to approach the case proves that he’s the best man for the job.
The FBI’s carelessness once again highlights how large institutions often fail to handle cases with the same care as the Navajo Police, like Joe, who catch important details they might otherwise brush over.
Zahn McClarnon has consistently delivered great performances throughout the season, inviting us into Joe’s internal reflections despite the emotional guard he puts up around other characters.
The focus on Chee for the past few weeks has been great, but getting a look back into Joe’s interior world that lasts more than a couple of minutes works super well.
This move also sets up the eventual, larger confrontation between Joe and Irene, which will inevitably be a memorable showdown for the ages.
Also, giving the characters personal stakes beyond the main mystery of Leroy makes their character arcs throughout the season even more compelling, especially as we approach the season finale.
With only two more episodes left in the season, let’s cross our fingers that the payoff for finding Leroy will be worth all the effort and hardship that the detectives have gone through.
