Dark Winds Season 4 Episode 7 packs in the action, investigation of the larger mystery, and delivers a surprising plot twist, all in 40 minutes.
After a few Chee-centric episodes, this one pulls the focus back to Joe, cementing him as the season’s central protagonist for the final arc.
Plus, Irene makes some shocking moves that prove she’s just the villain that we’ve been expecting since the beginning.
Billie also returns on screen after her recent absence and makes a new discovery that has been foreshadowed throughout Dark Winds Season 4.
On top of all that, the last ten minutes contained so much new information about the heart of the mystery, so let’s unpack everything that happened!
Billie Plays Hide and Seek
Without giving too much away, the moments Billie shares with the person she encounters honestly flesh out her character more than this whole season has.
I really wish the show paid more attention to developing Billie, because she’s such a fascinating character.
Her perspective on the case, especially as someone with personal emotional stakes, has been relatively underemphasized compared to the detectives’ perspectives.
On the latest episode, she demonstrates emotional vulnerability that definitely cements her as a memorable part of this season.
After confronting how Billie’s familial trauma has affected her, her plotline finally addresses the possibility of her beginning to heal after experiencing the deaths of Albert and her grandfather.
There’s a really great scene where Billie and Irene finally come to a head, culminating in one of the best chase scenes of Dark Winds Season 4 between two of the smartest women on the show.
While Billie’s future might be uncertain, I’m crossing my fingers that we’ll get to see her again in the finale next week, now that she’s found a new goal beyond finding Leroy.
The Real Big Bad
Time and time again, Irene has proven herself to be one of the most dangerous villains of the series.
She earned some sympathy for her storyline with her father, but we see a shocking kill from her that obliterates any prior goodwill.
Learning about Irene’s past and the legacy of evil in her family deepens the impact of the unexpected death.
Of course, the show handles this moment with an impactful, emotional nuance, but it’s definitely a part of the season that I’ll be thinking about for a while.
But the real “big bad” of the season is McNair, whom we finally get to spend some time with.
Given that he’s, in some way, responsible for the deaths that Irene helped carry out, McNair definitely has a threatening, ominous presence that’s felt even though he’s behind bars.
His meeting with Joe also highlighted the officer’s ability to engage with emotions and resist intimidation after so many years of experience.
Also, Joe really gets in touch with his emotions when he talks with Emma, and they reach an unsurprising but realistic conclusion that the show has been setting up.
After the diner scene on Dark Winds Season 4 Episode 4, it seems like both characters are still working through the process of unpacking the trauma from the death of their son and BJ.
As such, their ability to be together, despite all the love they share, is still marked by feelings of grief and betrayal that Emma understandably cannot overlook.
But even after all his years on the job, nothing could have prepared Joe for this episode’s ending.
Ghosts Are Everywhere
The overarching themes of the season, as it begins to wrap up, actually work quite well together.
After learning about Chee’s ghostsickness that’s been causing his visions and injuries, we finally see him open up about his mother’s death.
This decision is a particularly significant step for Chee, who has been trying to suppress his emotions, and it marks a potential turning point in his healing.
We get a particularly emotional moment shared by Bernadette and Chee that ties back to how both characters have struggled to work through their own insecurities and past traumas.
Additionally, it plants a seed of hope that the couple can work through their personal and work conflicts, which have been causing trouble since the season premiere.
Speaking of “ghosts,” the final reveal of Leroy Gorman’s identity was something no one could have predicted.
This plot twist was creative, but the execution was a bit rushed, especially since the explanations were delivered through a series of flashbacks.
I wish we had gotten to sit in the moment of realization for a while longer to really bring home the impact, especially after how much time the series had dedicated to the search for Leroy.
Also, the transition from time in LA to the quick return to the reservation was more jarring and rushed than I expected.
After the surprising final minutes of the episode that somewhat wrapped up most of the major questions around the motivations, I’m curious about what the season finale will deliver.
The next episode will likely wrap up Chee’s storyline and give him the much-needed closure he deserves.
But for Joe and Irene, there’s no telling what might happen next.
