If Doc wanted to leave viewers emotional, reeling, completely hooked, and eager for its next chapter, it succeeded and then some.
Doc’s Season 2 Finale delivered a high-stakes medical crisis, a pressure-cooker effect, and forced many of its characters to confront hard truths. And you know what? It resulted in an exciting soft reset that feels like a fresh start.
And to that, we have to toast whorunner Hank Steinberg. We had the privilege of catching up with him again to chat about what’s in store and how he executed this vision.
The finale felt like a pressure cooker, almost claustrophic in the pressure placed on everyone, but it also forced them to set everything aside and focus on the medicine. And it was riveting.
For showrunner Hank Steinberg, that was always the vision.
“You know, we wanted to end the season with a bang,” Steinberg shares. “And we love the idea of everyone being locked into this kind of cauldron that was a very difficult situation to tackle medically and emotionally.”
That “cauldron” didn’t just elevate the tension regarding the crisis at hand and the medical components.
It also became the catalyst for major emotional shifts, especially for Amy, whose journey throughout Doc has been so deeply rooted in identity, trauma, and self-discovery.
And the finale leaves Amy and viewers with a refreshing clarity that leaves us wanting more.
“There are things that happen in the course of the finale that kind of inform her about her own personality and psychology that allow her to make some decisions about what she wants to do,” Steinberg shares.
And so much of Amy’s clarity is connected to the dynamic she has with Joan and those final moments after her maternal figure once again shows her this labor of love.
By the end of Doc Season 2, it’s evident that Joan has inspired Amy to be and do better, and that push is one she doesn’t take lightly. It’s the best way to honor her friend.
“She is now left with wanting to kind of fulfill Joan’s legacy of giving and being of service, which is a very different kind of direction for her compared to, you know, who am I? Who was I? How do I integrate?” Steinberg explains.
“There was a lot of looking inward for Amy in the first few seasons.
“And now she’s kind of been redirected to looking outward and saying, what am I going to do? What am I going to put into the world? How am I going to bring out the best in others… in a way that should reflect back on hopefully being fulfilling for her, which is Joan’s point for her.”
That shift also serves as a meaningful close to Joan’s arc, emotionally and thematically. And it’s a satisfying end.
“Felicity had such an amazing balance of tough love and kindness and wanting things for Amy, but that are also connected to her own point of view on the world,” Steinberg expresses. “So it was a very fulfilling end to her story for us.”
Of course, emotional growth on Doc rarely comes without complications, and we see that most with Doc’s relationships. And now we have a new one to add to the mix.
The introduction of Ben Grant in the finale is something entirely unexpected and new, and it’s no accident that his arrival feels both organic and a little bit disruptive in an intriguing way.
“We always feel like it’s fun when a show brings in someone that they’re planning to use for the following season when they bring them in at the end of the previous season and give them a proper platform and a more organic introduction,” Steinberg tells us.
And Ben is poised to make an immediate impact. He’s also incredibly attractive, and we couldn’t help joking about how ridiculously attractive this cast is!
“The man’s got a swagger, and the man’s got to ooze his charm,” he adds. “We just were very, very excited about the different energy that he’s going to bring to the show.”
You don’t introduce the likes of Blair Underwood without having a full role to explore, and we can expect a lot of Ben next season, according to Steinberg.
“He’ll be incorporated into the hospital next season. I won’t say the exact details of how it happened, but we have a very fun way that we’re already talking about for season three to bring him in officially. He’s going to be a great addition.”
With that shocking twist in those final moments of the Doc Season 2 Finale, it’s safe to say that Ben will shake things up. We have another attractive guy with a history with Amy, and once again, she doesn’t remember it!
“The fun twist at the end that he and Amy had some sort of romantic liaison in the past that he remembers that she doesn’t… is very titillating and exciting.”
Ben’s presence comes at an interesting time when it feels like the original love triangle is taking a pause. During the finale, we see Jake and Amy at odds, but we also see him reconnecting with Rachel, his ex-wife.
And that may be something Doc wants to explore a bit more. It’s a development that can challenge the characters and the viewers alike.
“In season one, we established that Jake is divorced and has a kid, but it was all pretty much off-camera… And we were determined… to widen out the lens on all of our characters.”
In a sense, that meant fully exploring Jake’s past and also his dynamic with the other relationship in his life that rivals Amy a bit.
“We wanted to meet her and understand who she is and what their dynamic was and create a character that the audience would feel… or look at this woman and go, ‘this is a formidable potential competitor to Jake’s heart.”
Doc digs a bit into a pressure point in Jake and Amy’s relationship regarding Rachel. He has a history with this woman, which sparks some insecurity and uncertainty.
“How can Amy compete with all that history between him and Rachel?”
“We’re finding the audience is almost, in spite of themselves, kind of rooting for Jake to heal his home life and get back to sort of what makes sense on paper,” he states. “Even though the heart says go with Amy, maybe the head says go back with your ex if you can repair that.”
It’s that emotional conflict that intensifies the finale’s central crisis, which served a very specific storytelling purpose.
Trauma fascinatingly begets trauma on Doc, and it seems that line of thinking was intentional.
“The idea to use the trauma of the virus to kind of force everyone to kind of confront really hard truths — that was always what was exciting for us in conceiving of it.”
Amy isn’t the only person embarking on a path of self-discovery and purpose. Steinberg and I also talk about Michael’s latest journey.
“Michael is definitely back to rolling up his sleeves and dealing with patients. And that’s why he became a doctor to begin with.
“We were able to explore in the flashbacks that for a moment he saw another path for himself… and part of him must have needed a shift in his life, especially after Danny died.
“There was a very heartbreaking moment… where he was doing chest compressions with the child and flashing back to what happened with Danny.”
But even with those challenges, it seems Michael may finally be on the right path. And it won’t have to revolve around Amy, at least not romantically.
“I feel like Michael’s got his mojo back. And that’s going to be fun to explore… what is his mojo, getting his mojo back without Amy in the picture for him romantically? We’re going to see a new, rekindled Michael in season three.”
Doc Season 2 used flashbacks in an exciting new way by finally diving deeper into Amy’s past beyond just her grief over Danny.
From the origins of Amy’s dynamic with Joan to losing her mother and the early days of her young adulthood with Gina and Michael, they’ve been illuminating and among Doc’s most defining storytelling tools.
They’ve also added more depth and nuance to Amy.
We spoke about the exploration of Amy via those flashbacks and the uncanny resemblance between the young actors and their present-day counterparts.
“We love the actresses who play young Amy and young Gina, and young Michael too. It feels like, wow, we really can go back and tell those stories. They did such a great job of mimicking their older counterparts. And if it feels so believable, and that’s always tricky when you try to do that, but they pulled it off.
“As long as the show is about Amy and her identity and who she is… There will be opportunities to go back there. So for sure, we will do that.”
Fortunately, even some of these threads that feel like they’re hanging will also be explored next season. One that comes to mind is Gina’s potential adoption storyline.
Many of us were rooting for her to adopt little Walter, and that arc stirred up something in Gina that may be worth exploring deeper. Has Gina maybe changed her mind about parenthood?
“It’s been unrealized so far,” Steinberg shares. “And maybe she might be having second thoughts about that as a life choice. So that’ll be a fun thing to explore in season three.”
At its core, though, the finale was designed to leave an impact, not just through shock, but through emotional resonance. And we can safely say that Doc succeeded. It’s certainly what Steinberg was striving for.
It’s what he hopes the viewers can take away from the full event.
“Hopefully they feel like they went on a really wild ride that was very emotionally satisfying and cathartic,” Steinberg says. “And that they are excited and galvanized for what’s going to come next in the next chapter of all these people’s journeys.”
