Oh, I can’t wait to hear how the “why does everyone swear all the time” and “it ruins the show” people felt about the full-frontal male nudity that opened DTF St. Louis Season 1 Episode 5.
That wasn’t done indiscriminately, since who Floyd was then is at the heart of this story. Possibly in how Carol viewed Floyd and definitely in how Floyd viewed himself.
His penis was at the heart of him, and how he felt about his affliction was a significant driver in his life.
Far more unexpected to most was how Floyd took the news of the affair. He was OK with it. He knew intimacy was their trouble spot, and seeing Carol happy with Clark made Floyd happy, too.
It certainly lends more credence to the idea that he took himself out of the equation, even if, in the way he could have done it, it also framed the two people he claims to love as the people who did it.
These relationships have been nothing short of remarkable all season, so it didn’t really shock me that Floyd asked to watch. I mean, why the hell not at this point?
Floyd has frenched a guy and discussed it with Clark while they were arm-in-arm at a winery. So, why not?
But it wasn’t really a kink as much as he didn’t want to be left out. If they were going to be an off-the-wall threesome, then he wanted to be a fly on the wall.
He claimed he wasn’t as interested in their sex life but rather in what they might discuss. He would be on the outside while the two people he cared about most would have secrets. And yes, that would suck.
That he used his Old Friends discount at the Quality Garden to do it, and Clark accepted it with a smile, was just another phase of this very interesting three-way.
But ultimately, that didn’t seem to be the whole of it.
And then the Quality Garden woman revealed that they often arrived together. It was so, shall we say, interesting to her that she remembered it clearly.
Homer was banking on this case to be easy to solve because of the ordinary people at its center. The joke was on him.
Because OMG, are these normal people all kinds of fucked up.
It’s been apparent all along, but when Homer and Plumb visited Carol again, they realized how abnormal Carol really was with her “Can you speak up? No one can hear you” commentary and her “no way Jose” as if it was just something everyone did.
“That was weird. She was weird… A lot of wows with that lady.” Ya think???
That only scratched the surface.
When Floyd, hiding in the closet of the Quality Garden, watching Clark spell out Rim on Carol’s back with his finger, saw a man in a suit making a beeline to the pool, he jumped out, screamed Rim Job, and rushed to the guy’s side, saving him the humiliation of a dunk in a fancy suit.
“What you’re doing with Carol is not right, bro. I want to meet and figure this out, bro.” That message caught Homer and Plumb’s attention, but not for the right reason. Floyd wanted to give Clark sex advice. Because of course he did.
He also used that moment of camaraderie to discuss how he can’t get boners. Clark thought maybe Floyd just needed readers, you know, to see the nipples, thus ruining the intensity of his desire.
Amphezyne could do it for him, but his doctor wouldn’t prescribe it. And that’s how the drug in the Bloody Mary comes into focus. Floyd wanted Clark to get it for him.
All of this almost revealed the details behind what broke Floyd’s dick. The story played out like a scene from a Final Destination movie, with each small calamity shown in detail until the big reveal.
Well, at least that’s what Clark was expecting. Instead, it led Floyd to learn sign language at a time when he was supposed to be getting a job in finance.
Life throws us all kinds of curveballs, and to get through them, we need to rope in those around us to make it happen. It seems like that’s what these three were doing. Trying to find their happiness in a way most others would never understand.
By the end of the hour, things got even more confusing.
Floyd wanted to become the man pleasuring Carol at the Quality Garden, and Clark would be the man in the closet. Floyd wanted to think they were all sharing an experience, but if he and Clark didn’t switch spaces, then his experience would fold in on itself.
And it made me wonder: would there come a point when Carol said to make it feel whole, “I need to be in the closet, watching you, Floyd, in bed with Clark”?
Or would she at some point feel as though she was losing agency in the plan she devised from cornhole to Orange Julius to the Quality Garden and take matters into her own hands again by killing off Floyd?
But what’s really interesting here is that the reason Clark stopped talking to Homer isn’t that he was concerned for himself. He was concerned that revealing what happened next would hurt Floyd. Even in death, Clark wanted to protect his friend. But it’s a capital case now, and time to consider himself.
And none of what we experienced during the latest episode of DTF St. Louis indicated anything that could harm him in that way.
So there is still a lot left to unpack, including what was on the sealed or expunged case in Carol’s past.
And so far, we haven’t seen any reason for Floyd to kill himself. I thought he could be magnanimous enough that he might step aside to give his friends peace, but would he really be doing that?
Clark is still married with children. That won’t disappear if Floyd dies. Floyd’s death wouldn’t easily open up a new life for his wife and best friend. It might complicate things even further.
And, of course, Homer had an idea for accessing Carol’s expunged records, and, like a normal person (which are in short supply here), Plumb submitted an application to her department in Carol’s name so they could see what they were working with.
Will it be juicy or another dead end? At this point, the number of straws we’re grasping at is giving us enough straws that we’ll never have to buy another.
The plot keeps thickening and taking us on goose chases as wild as Floyd’s story from Chicago, and we still don’t know what “broke his dick.”
Carol had the second bike, so she had the opportunity. But if it was in her garage, Richard had the opportunity as well. Then again, Clark’s wife has one at her house, too. And it still blows my mind how little we know about her.
Ordinarily, having so many questions can get annoying. Knowing this is a limited series and that Floyd is already dead allows us to experience the journey to answers differently. At least it does for me.
