Dutton Ranch Is Already Testing Beth and Rip’s Patience (and Mine)

When Yellowstone went off the air in 2025, Beth and Rip got the best ending of any of the characters.

They were unburdened of everything that had shackled them to Yellowstone and, for once, seemed to find genuine happiness.

As a viewer and longtime fan of both characters, it was a satisfying conclusion — even knowing another chapter was always going to follow.

So when Dutton Ranch was announced, I knew their peace wouldn’t last long.

But I didn’t expect it to be tested this quickly. Three episodes in, I already have whiplash from the sheer amount of chaos being thrown their way.

Their ranch has burned down, a dead body has turned up at their new Texas property, and their Black Angus herd has been hit with foot-and-mouth disease.

Add in the fact they’re collecting enemies at every turn, and Beth and Rip are clearly not in for an easy ride.

The move to Texas was never going to be smooth. No corner of the Yellowstone universe has ever been interested in giving the Duttons peace.

Still, it would have been refreshing to see them build something without it immediately being torn down for drama’s sake.

Dutton Ranch Could Have Been a Change of Pace

That, in itself, could have been the challenge for the writers: how to give Beth and Rip a new chapter without defaulting to constant catastrophe.

Instead, the show leans heavily on familiar chaos, and while it’s entertaining, it does flatten any sense of forward momentum.

I’m still grinning seeing them back on screen, but it’s hard not to feel some fatigue this early into the season.

And if this is how things look three episodes in, it raises the question: what exactly is still left to throw at them?

They’re of course heading toward a clash with Beulah Jackson, but I’m not entirely sold on her as the central antagonist.

Annette Bening is doing her best, but the writing has her locked into a fairly one-dimensional villain role — more idea than fully formed character.

There’s a glimmer of something more interesting there, but it hasn’t been developed enough yet.

Hopefully, that changes as the Duton Ranch Season 1 progresses.

It’s Not All Doom and Gloom

The strongest element of Dutton Ranch so far is the expanded role for Finn Little as Carter.

He drifted to the margins in Yellowstone, but here he finally feels like a co-lead with material worth investing in.

His potential dynamic with Oreana is particularly interesting because they sit on opposite ends of the personality spectrum.

Beulah’s push for Oreana to calm down could even make Carter an unexpected stabilizing presence in her life.

I can already imagine the joint family dinners if this relationship continues.

Beth wears her true feelings on her face, and there’s no way that she’d be able to sit at the Ten Petal Ranch without telling everyone at the table what she thinks of them.

Hey, at least she’s honest.

Beulah would happily sit at the same table with a smile and talk of peace between the families, while quietly working out how to undermine Beth at every turn.

That tension feels like where the series is heading, especially with the early seeds being planted around Wes’s death and Rip’s involvement.

Some of it feels predictable, but there’s still room for the show to surprise us if it leans into genuine consequences rather than familiar Yellowstone-style escalation.

Right now, though, Dutton Ranch isn’t really challenging expectations — it’s mostly reinforcing them.

And for a series built on chaos, that might be its biggest risk.
