We recently had the chance to test two different Ovur Cards products: one of the TCG Pokémon boxes and one of the basketball boxes. Going in, we weren’t entirely sure what to expect from the repack format, but we came away pleasantly surprised—particularly by the quality of the hits, the overall opening experience, and the value Ovur is proposing.
If you’ve tried buying trading cards lately, you already know part of the problem Ovur is attempting to solve. Popular Pokémon products can be frustratingly difficult to find at normal retail prices. Shelves are frequently picked over, sought-after releases sell out quickly, and scalpers and resellers can make the situation even worse by buying up inventory and immediately listing it at a premium. Sports cards have their own version of the same problem. You can spend a lot of time hunting for the right product, finally find something in stock, and still open a box where the overwhelming majority of the cards aren’t particularly exciting.
That’s what makes Ovur’s approach interesting. Rather than trying to recreate the traditional sealed retail experience, they’re building the product around the part people actually enjoy: getting good cards.
These Are A Super Fun Rip
Both boxes felt like they were created around one very simple idea—make opening packs exciting again. Instead of tearing through pack after pack hoping that eventually something worthwhile appears, Ovur puts much more emphasis on cards collectors actually want to pull. The hits we received were noticeably better than we expected, and there was a good mix of recognizable cards, interesting inserts, and genuinely exciting pulls.
The Pokémon TCG box was especially fun to open. One of the problems with buying standard Pokémon products is that you can spend $30, $50, or considerably more and still walk away feeling like you didn’t really get anything. There is obviously always going to be randomness involved with cards, and that’s part of the fun, but Ovur seems to be trying to shift the balance toward a more consistently rewarding experience.
Our TCG box had enough variety that opening each pack was still entertaining, but the better cards actually felt like hits. You weren’t just sorting through a pile of bulk afterward wondering where the money went.
The basketball box gave us much the same impression. Anyone who has opened a lot of sports cards knows how quickly unwanted base cards can accumulate. Most collectors—and especially most kids—aren’t trying to collect every player in the league. They usually have a handful of favorite players or teams. Ovur’s concept feels much more aligned with the way people actually collect.
And that brings us to where we think this product makes the most sense: kids.
Perfect For Kids and Adults Alike
Ovur Cards is absolutely perfect for younger collectors.
Adults in the hobby might spend time thinking about print runs, population reports, long-term values, grading potential, or whether a particular box has the right expected value. Kids usually look at cards very differently. They want to open a pack and yell because they found their favorite player. They want a shiny Pokémon they’ve been looking for. They want a rookie, an autograph, a numbered card, an illustration rare, or simply something that immediately feels special.
That’s the experience Ovur seems to be designing around.
There’s a huge difference between watching a kid open six packs and ending up with a stack of cards they barely look at again, versus watching them pull one card of their favorite player that they immediately run across the room to show someone. Based on the products we tested, Ovur appears to understand that distinction.
It also makes the product particularly appealing as a gift. Parents and grandparents don’t necessarily understand which hobby box, booster set, parallel, or product variation they’re supposed to buy. And even if they do, actually finding the product in stock at retail can be another challenge entirely. The current trading-card market has made what should be a simple gift unnecessarily complicated.
Ovur simplifies that proposition: buy a box designed to contain cards the recipient is actually going to be excited about.
There’s also an interesting value argument behind the concept. Traditional card products aren’t inherently a bad value simply because every card isn’t expensive—the randomness is obviously part of collecting. But there’s no denying that collectors can spend substantial amounts of money accumulating cards they never particularly wanted.
Ovur is essentially trying to concentrate more of that value into the cards people actually care about.
After opening both the Pokémon and basketball products, we think that’s the strongest part of the idea. This isn’t really about replacing traditional packs for hardcore collectors who love chasing a specific card from a specific set. It’s a different kind of product. It’s aimed at delivering a more consistently fun opening experience.
And based on the two boxes we tested, it worked.
Surprisingly Good Quality and Value
We were genuinely surprised by the quality of the hits we received. The packs were fun to open, the cards felt thoughtfully selected, and when we were finished, we had considerably fewer “why did I get this?” cards than we’d normally expect from a comparable opening session.
In a hobby where popular products are routinely sold out, scalpers can drive prices well beyond retail, and getting a worthwhile pull often requires buying far more product than originally planned, there’s something refreshing about simply opening a box and getting cards you’re excited to keep.
For serious collectors, Ovur is an interesting alternative.
For parents buying cards for kids, though, we think the concept is even stronger.
Because at the end of the day, a nine-year-old doesn’t care about the economics of the trading-card industry.
They care about pulling the card that makes their day. And Ovur seems to have built its entire product around creating more of those moments.
