FBI’s Juliana Aidén Martinez Discusses Who Eva Ramos Is And Her Recent Intense Storyline

- Advertisment -

Juliana Aidén Martinez is kicking butt as FBI’s Eva Ramos.

Eva is Scola’s newest partner, a strong woman who doesn’t take any nonsense.

We had the chance to catch up with Martinez for a few minutes, and she had a lot to share about Eva, how she is different from Kate Silva, and what could happen next for her.

I also saw you on SVU last year. What was it like making that transition between that character and your character on FBI?
It’s been interesting.

I wanted to show something different. I want to be part of the squad in a different way, to show a different side.

  • CIA Season 1 Episode 5 Has Us Questioning Everything We Know About Colin
  • Memory of a Killer Season 1 Episode 8 Finally Unmasks The Ferryman

And the writers and the FBI team were on board with this.

And so it’s been really cool to see how I can play an FBI agent and this woman totally differently than Kate Silva on Law & Order: SVU.

(Bennett Raglin/CBS)

What would you say are the main ways that Eva is different from Kate?

Well, I think there are a few things with Kate.

So much of it was penance, and having a dad that everyone looked up to, and so she was living under a shadow.

She felt, I need to prove who I am and my work and my effort… I’m going to be quiet, but I’m going to eventually be seen.

And with Eva, I just feel like so much of her is out. It’s a bit more of an external character, and she’s not afraid to say what she thinks, and she doesn’t have that shadow over her.

It’s a great dynamic with Scola, because he also tends to be like, “I didn’t say we were doing it that way.”

I think that the writers were smart to ask, “What happens if we put two people who think they’re both the smartest person in a room together?”

They both come from Manhattan, are cultured, look nice, and want to be respected.

How would two similar ions play with each other? That’s what’s really fun.

It’s especially interesting because Scola has jumped from partner to partner over the last two years and is used to being the lone wolf who doesn’t need anybody.

(Bennett Raglin/CBS)

But also, what’s really cool, just to finish your point, is that they both lost partners.

So to me, that’s the most interesting thing with Scola and Eva. They’re both coming from the loss of a partner.

How do you start again with someone new?

Do you agree with Martinez’s take on Eva and Scola?

How much of Eva’s backstory did you know before you got the script for FBI Season 8 Episode 15?

I didn’t really know any of this backstory.

(Bennett Raglin/CBS )

I knew that she had a history with her past partner, and that she was a prosecutor, and that something made her turn into a field agent.

And all those theories were possibilities were in my head.

But for me, just knowing and getting a sense more and more of who Eva is — I knew it probably had to do with something like needing to be out in the field and maybe getting the answers there — it’s going to be a lot more fun than being behind my desk with paperwork.

In other words, I knew Eva needed to find out the answers out there, instead of the answers in here, where there’s more politics and just administrative work.

But what it was specifically, I had no idea.

Some of those scenes were really intense. How do you protect your own mental health as an actor when you do those kinds of scenes?

I don’t know.

You get a glass of wine. You and wine at the end of the day.

I know John [Boyd] already goes for runs in the cold, which I tried a little bit because it was freezing when we filmed this.

Because I also think you’re operating with so much adrenaline when you’re having to do such intense scenes.

So a lot of it is just finding ways to unwind at the end of the day so you can get some sleep. So it was an array of runs in the cold, hot showers, and glasses of wine.

By the way, when you do chases, do you actually run yourself?

I’m proud to say, I do the running myself.

But with some of the stunts, like glass breaking, I would love to do them because I love Tom Cruise and everything he does, but they do need to be safe, of course.

So that’s always a dance. And the stunt people are so good at their job.

I’m constantly impressed and grateful for them, but I do run, so I get to put my soccer legs to good use.

Did you think that Eva did the right thing when she decided to go to Isabel with Scola about what Vega was offering?

I do think that honesty is the best policy. So I think she had to at that point.

She had to go and tell them. I do think it wasn’t something she could do on her own.

She needed to rely on and trust her team for something to happen for the greater good. So I do think it was the right decision, even if her personal vendetta came into play.

And then at the end, when he escapes, and she’s thinking, ‘Oh God, not again…’

It’s so hard. That just stabbed me in the heart.

They do such a good job of having those endings where everything seems like it’s okay, and then all of a sudden…

Exactly. But these characters’ journeys are ongoing. You know, just as we are in life. You get little victories and little defeats, and you keep doing your best.

How do you think it might affect Eva’s relationship with Scola as they move forward past this?

I think we went past the niceties in this episode, and we really got to see each other as people.

Scola really got to see who Eva was at that moment and the things that drive her, what she might cry about at night, and the things that she repeats and ruminates in her head over and over, and when you get to know someone, then you get to show up as a better partner for them, and vice versa.

And I do think that that’s they can be better partners for each other at the end of this.

Scola also went through that whole thing with his partner leaving, and he got hurt on Tiffany’s last mission.

Yeah, exactly. I know my heart reaches out for him. He’s got his hands full dealing with me.

I know we’re coming towards the end of our time together, so I wanted to ask you what message you’d like to give to the fans.

Thank you so much for watching the show.

We wouldn’t have gone to 150 episodes without the fans. And so the fans are what make all of this possible.

I’m just so thankful to them for tuning in and for giving their love and support. And let’s keep celebrating into the 200th, 300th episode.
