Based on the latest promo for Fire Country Season 5, I’m sorry to report that nothing has changed.
Not even a new showrunner could save this show from some of its biggest shortcomings; in fact, they have doubled down on them.
The promo for the season debuting on October 9 teases the new arcs for the season, and it’s more of the same.
Bode, the Flawed Superhero
If you were hoping Bode would be written off the show, he’s now confidently added another descriptor. He is no longer just an ex-con and an addict; he’s also a firefighter.
He earned the position by taking risks that should have killed him years ago, but he’s still here. The nepotism also helped.
The new season will feature those classic Fire Country emergencies that are frankly the only reason I’m hanging on.
But if you thought it was going to be smooth sailing, Bode is here to remind us that the world revolves around him.
He must have forgotten to add Spider-Man and Superman, because boy, does he superhero those rescues.
And Then They Were Three
Meanwhile, despite being the most unmemorable couple in all of television, you wouldn’t guess what’s going on with Jake and Violet.
Well, you can if you’ve watched the promo because Violet is pregnant.
Now look, they are the least harmful characters in this show, so I hope they won’t spike my cortisol that much.
Their scenes will just roll on by because they have no connection with the viewer. Things can only be bad if the show focuses on them too much.
And now, maybe with a baby, Jake would stop being one so much.
He’s always wanted a family; now he has one, and a baby can not leave or reject him just yet.

New Season, New Potential Loves
There are also some new characters as we catch a glimpse of CJ, a new series regular played by Olivia Thirlby.
The casting announcement describes her as “a quick-witted, fiercely independent, blue-collar, decorated urban firefighter who bolted her station house and city for mysterious reasons.
“After six months on the road, trying to outrun whatever happened, and herself, fate strands her in Edgewater where she crosses paths with Bode. Despite having no experience fighting woodland fires, Bode believes CJ has something to offer Station 42.
And despite the serious culture shock, this fish out of water comes to believe rural Edgewater has something to offer her.”
The description teases an interesting character, but we can’t get a feel for her personality just yet from the clip.
One sure way to ruin her is if what I think will happen, happens.
She will probably be paired with Bode romantically if Chloe and her son decide to leave town. She’ll be pulled into Bode’s chaos and left apologizing for, or trying to fix, a grown man.
Speaking of Chloe and her son, we don’t see them in the promo, so maybe our prayers have come true. No one needs a constant reminder of who’s responsible for what happened to Vince.
Long Live Small Town Nepotism!
Another interesting character is a young man who Manny says is his nephew.
If you thought Fire Country was done with nepotism, you have another thing coming. Manny’s nephew comes with all the angst typical of Fire Country’s family members.
He’s young but has already managed to land himself in prison, and now he’s part of the teenage stinky ninja fighters.
For some reason, Manny thinks his nephew is beyond redemption, while Eve believes the opposite.
That’s just a great setup for the classic arguing-while-the-world-is-burning trope Fire Country is famous for.
Other Observations From the Promo
- Jake’s brother Malcolm is nowhere to be seen. It could be cause of the short promo, though.
- Manny’s new sweetie Camille is back, and she seems ready to lead a spinoff.
- Sheriff Country‘s characters appear, so that crossover is locked and loaded.
- I have to shout out that scene of Bode crawling with a little girl on his back. Peak Bodeism!
