Floating or Strategy? Taylor Brown Making the Final Three Has Big Brother Fans Divided

“Floaters, you better grab a life vest!”

Rachel Reilly gave Big Brother fans one of the show’s most memorable lines, and more than a decade later, “floater” is still a dirty word in the Big Brother house. Nobody wants to be called one.

Now Taylor Brown is sitting in the Final Three of Big Brother Season 28, and some fans aren’t happy about it. The criticism is pretty simple: Taylor did nothing all season and floated her way to the end. I’m not buying it.

There’s a difference between doing nothing and deliberately making yourself look like you’re doing nothing.

Taylor has said her strategy was to lay low, watch, listen, gather information, and avoid looking like a threat. If you watched closely this season, that’s exactly what she did.

Was it flashy? No. Did she control the house? Absolutely not.

But Big Brother isn’t a competition to see who can make the most noise. That may be part of the problem for some fans.

We’ve become accustomed to measuring a Big Brother player by competition wins, blindsides, and how many times they can say something was “their move.” Taylor’s game doesn’t give us much of that.

Instead, her game required patience. She allowed bigger personalities and bigger targets to take up the oxygen in the house while she stayed out of the way.

That’s not the kind of gameplay that produces a season full of highlight-reel moments, but it can keep you from walking out the door.

Taylor understood the game happening around her, even when she wasn’t the person in power. We saw some of the clearest examples during Lala’s HOH when Taylor helped her work through what was happening in the house and talked strategy with her.

Taylor understood information and relationships that Lala didn’t always see at the time. She listened, observed, and offered advice as Lala tried to figure out her next move. That’s strategy.

And it wasn’t the only time Taylor showed that she knew what was happening. She talked game, paid attention to the relationships around her, and, most importantly, made herself appear less dangerous than the people sitting next to her.

Taylor touched the block again and again and survived. Critics can say she stayed because there was always someone more threatening to evict. Well… yeah. Isn’t that the point?

If I can convince you that somebody else needs to leave before me week after week, and suddenly there are only three people left in the house, maybe I wasn’t doing such a bad job after all.

There’s also something to be said for knowing the kind of player you are. Not everyone can dominate competitions or command a room, and trying to play someone else’s game can send you home quickly.

Taylor found a style that worked for her and stuck with it, even if viewers didn’t always find it exciting.

And when she had to pull out a win, she did! She won the Final Four HOH, guaranteeing herself a spot in the Final Three.

Then she won Part One of the final HOH competition, putting herself one win away from deciding who sits beside her on finale night.

That doesn’t erase her weaknesses.

Taylor doesn’t have a résumé full of huge moves, and if she reaches the Final Two, she’ll have to convince the jury that laying low was intentional, not accidental. That may be her biggest challenge.

Big Brother fans love big moves, blindsides, competition beasts, and players who control votes. But there’s more than one way to play the game.

Sometimes the loudest player gets evicted while the person sitting quietly in the corner watches, listens, takes notes, and waits for the right moment.

Call Taylor a floater if you want. She might float all the way to finale night. And if she does, somebody better check on Rachel Reilly!
