Edward “Ed” Baldwin is no more after For All Mankind Season 5 Episode 3, “Home.” His own stubbornness speeds up his inevitable end, but it would have taken a few more weeks.
As the man who always seemed invincible tries to recover in the hospital, his life of glory plays in his mind.
He’s seen conflict and war countless times. He’s been in situations where he should have never survived, yet he did.
It’s a bittersweet feeling to reflect on past glories while knowing this is the end. There’s no maneuver, enemy, or tech fix left.
His body has failed him — the very cells that gave him life turn against him as his cancer worsens — and he exacerbates the situation by flying.
Even amid this sadness, one can’t help but admire the life Ed has lived. It cost him everything, but he lived on his own terms until the end.
Only Ed would leave his deathbed for one last drink, despite everyone’s advice.
Joel Kinnaman has been a revelation as Ed Baldwin. He has anchored the show with his calm presence, which can seem stoic but hides a deep, emotional strength that strives to do what’s right.
I’ve seen Kinnaman play different roles, and Ed will remain his greatest achievement.
It demanded everything from him, and he delivered.
While I wasn’t fully impressed with his portrayal of Ed in the last two seasons, I understand some things were out of his control.
Ed departs peacefully, especially with his loved ones. He has done something selfless and lived an adventurous life.
Kelly and Alex are the fruits of his handiwork and his legacy. They have gained the courage and stamina that Ed has been known for, something he could never give his ex-wife Karen and late son, Shane.
But ending Ed’s story peacefully, surrounded by his departed loved ones, tactfully ties his death to unhealed wounds.
Ed never truly had a home; he was always traveling, seeking his next fulfillment.
In his final moments, he realizes he was always searching for a home — the crews he worked with and the family he left behind. They were his home; he just never stayed long enough.
He dies peacefully, even amid chaos.
Those Left
For All Mankind now enters an uncertain phase as its early heroes are gone, and new generations step in.
The pace is slow this season, as the show struggles to balance personal stories with larger plots.
Many characters, especially Alex, seem to drift, reacting to the world around them.
With his friends busy on Earth, he’s unsure of his direction. He appears to develop a relationship with Dev while caught up in Mars’ fragile politics.
Can he do both, especially if they clash? Being Ed’s grandson, he will probably try.
And someone needs to step up because at this rate, Mars is becoming a police state — every move carefully analyzed so as not to invite trouble.
While For All Mankind Season 5 Episode 1 had this playing out in the background, “Home” brings it to the forefront.
This place that many call home has been hijacked by selfish interests.
The Mars Peacekeepers dominate every conversation — they are aggressive, shady, and intoxicated with power.
Celia is the bright spot here, investigating secrets many want to keep quiet. With Ed gone, she’s the next best thing, despite being a new character.
And with Aleida taking control of her life, it seems characters are reclaiming their agency.
All that’s left is for Alex to find something meaningful to focus on, and the season might still be salvaged.
But so far, the hours are stacking up without anything significant to show for it.
Gut Check
“Home” struggles with tone, wavering between honoring Ed’s death and exploring other characters. Parts felt emotional, others fell flat. The shift was jarring and affected the overall quality.
Intrusive Thoughts
- Was Ed a soldier in the Korean War? It’s been so long that I barely remember some of the lore.
- Oh my Karen, Gordo, and Shane. This brings back memories. But in the real world or the afterlife, Shantel VanSanten will always look like a goddess.
- It should be illegal to let a mind like Margo’s go to waste in a jail cell. Her tear upon understanding her situation was heartbreaking.
