The Audacity may be centered on an overeager CEO in Silicon Valley, but the show wouldn’t be what it is without its incredible supporting cast of characters.
Among them are Tom, a representative from the Veterans Affairs, and Anushka, a driven executive who’s married to the awkward but intelligent Martin.
These characters are played by Rob Corddry, Simon Helberg, and Meaghan Rath, respectively, who chatted with us about their roles on this new AMC drama.
Although the show was set in Silicon Valley, Corddry didn’t think about the setting as much as he did about how his character perceives it.
As an outsider to the world of tech, Tom definitely didn’t mesh well with the vest-wearing tech bros.
Corddry used the term “fish out of water” to describe how the character feels about entering this competitive environment.
Likewise, Rath pointed out that the world of The Audacity is so much more than Silicon Valley and technology.
The cast did some research, but everything they needed to know about the location was written into the scripts.
“It’s really about these characters and their relationships, and how they navigate their ambition and need for money and power,” Rath said.
Helberg echoed her sentiment, stating that he definitely felt there are two parts of the Silicon Valley mentality that are fascinating: the cerebral and the entrepreneurial.
His character, Martin, definitely represents both these parts.
Helberg shared a bit about Martin’s background and how he went to Stanford at 15, raking in tons of cash before leaving the industry.
But on The Audacity, we see Martin try to defy his “pariah” status in the tech world by creating an AI agent named Xander.
“He’s not trying to integrate back into it,” Helberg clarified. “Just trying to do something bold.”
In a similar vein, Tom operates with a chip on his shoulder as he seeks out help from the tech industry to solve the Veterans Affairs’ data organization problem.
However, he definitely doesn’t have any high hopes for these greedy CEOs.
“He’s hoping for respect from these people just so he can get his problem solved,” Corddry said. “But he doesn’t expect it.”
Contrary to Tom and Martin’s cynicism, Anushka finds herself pulling some power plays throughout the season in hopes of climbing up the ranks.
While Anushka may not have as much experience in the tech industry, her strength lies in how she presents herself as “polished and refined.”
“She changes herself to meet the needs of whoever she’s talking to, and she’s learned that as a matter of survival,” Rath stated. “Her interest is really, at the end of the day, about herself.”
In the cutthroat world of The Audacity, it certainly is every person for themselves.
But the true question this series poses is: who will emerge victorious after all the chaos clears?
The Audacity Season 1 premieres Sunday, April 12, at 9/8c on AMC and AMC+.
