FROM Season 4 did not take time to settle the chaos but jumped right into it, dangling about three new questions for every one we thought the show would answer.
“The Arrival” carried forward from the immediate wreckage of FROM Season 3’s finale: Jim Matthews murdered in the woods with his throat torn open, the Man in Yellow grinning over his body, and Julie still mid-scream when the episode began.
However, no one saw the sudden poltergeist activity in Matthews’ kitchen coming, the first of its kind on the show.
While Tabitha, Julie, and Ethan waited at home for Jim to come back before dark — not yet knowing he wasn’t going to — objects in the kitchen began to throw themselves off without any apparent reason.
A wedding ring appears among the objects sent flying in the Season 4 trailer. And Eion Bailey, the actor who played Jim, is credited for five more episodes this season.
The question gets more complicated after he appears in front of Ethan in FROM Season 4 Episode 2.
And the way he acted wasn’t exactly like a child’s subconscious consoling him. Jim was looking out for something, trying to warn Ethan.
The Town Has Rules About Who Gets to Haunt It
FROM has been very creative with its dead characters.
Father Khatri has surfaced as a vision for Boyd more than once since his death — a familiar face appearing in moments of bleakness to push Boyd toward something or away from something else.
The ghost children chanting Anghkooey have drifted through the forest since long before any of the current residents arrived.
Victor spent decades watching them and drawing them before anyone else even knew what they were.
But the show has been fairly consistent about one thing: not everyone who dies in that town leaves a mark behind.
Plenty of people have been killed by the creatures across four seasons, and they vanished cleanly into the ground.
The Anghkooey children became what they are because of something very specific.
They were sacrificed in a ritual on the stone slabs in the tunnels by their parents, the same people who then became the nocturnal creatures the town has been fighting ever since.
Their deaths were a transaction, a piece of the town’s original architecture, which is presumably why they’re still present as spirits rather than simply… gone.
Father Khatri’s case is murkier, and the show has never fully clarified whether Boyd’s visions of him are genuinely Khatri’s spirit or something the town is generating to manipulate Boyd.
That ambiguity has always been deliberate, and it’s worth holding onto here, because the same uncertainty now applies to Jim.
What the premiere did make clear is that the Man in Yellow considered Jim important enough to eliminate personally, before disguising himself and entering the town.
So the question remains, whether dying at the Man in Yellow’s specific hands creates a different kind of spirit? Stuck in the town like its few dozen residents?
What are the rules, exactly?
Why Jim Specifically, and What the Kitchen Is Actually Saying
The show has yet to confirm anything, but here’s what we’ve observed so far.
The Man in Yellow told Julie in the premiere that no one can change the story once it’s been told. He said it directly, as a rule, almost cheerfully.
The show treated it as a hard wall. Jim’s death, in at least one timeline, was already done and dusted.
And yet Eion Bailey’s name sits in five more episode credits.
The kitchen activity didn’t happen randomly.
It happened the night Jim died, timed to the moment the Man in Yellow crossed the threshold of the town in his new disguise.
If the show were simply doing atmospheric horror — objects moving to spook the audience — it wouldn’t have planted that specific timing so carefully, and it wouldn’t have put a wedding ring in the Season 4 trailer among the things being thrown around.
That ring might be a connection.
Whether it belongs to Jim’s spirit, to whatever piece of him the town kept, or to something the Man in Yellow is doing deliberately to destabilize the Matthews family from the inside, all of it strongly suggests Jim still has a part to play.
The ghost children became spirits because their deaths were the founding act of the town’s evil.
Jim was killed by the founding force of the town’s evil — personally, directly, deliberately — right before that force was preparing to reinvent itself to enter the town’s community.
Maybe all of this was a coincidence, and the showrunners have an entirely different plan.
But we’ve watched FROM long enough to know the show rarely ever delves into coincidences, and everything happens for a reason.
The reason we’re hoping will be revealed soon.
