Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage Season 2 Episode 13 Took Some Risks With Mandy’s Story That Paid Off

- Advertisment -

Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage Season 2 Episode 13 could have been predictable — or annoying — but it somehow avoided these traps.

The story was supposed to be about Georgie’s 21st birthday, but it turned into Mandy trying to find out what she did after getting extremely drunk so that she knew what to apologize for.

This was dangerous territory for a mostly light-hearted comedy, but it worked.

Mental Health Stories Are Hard To Pull Off In Comedy Shows

Honestly, most storylines about depressed people — especially those who turn to alcohol or drugs to numb the pain — go off the rails in one way or another, often reinforcing harmful stereotypes or poking fun at the idea of mental health treatment at all.

I was expecting more of the same, especially since I knew Mandy getting drunk would be part of the story, but I was pleasantly surprised.

Instead of a typical story, we got an interesting format where, in Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage Season 2 Episode 13, Mandy woke up and had to ask others to flash back to what she did while drunk.

That was realistic without sacrificing humor, and it didn’t make the joke the things Mandy did.

It’s harder to judge this story as a comedy because the strongest parts were the most dramatic — the emotions behind Mandy’s behavior stood out more than any of the jokes.

But as stories about people in pain who drink and make a mess out of what’s supposed to be a happy occasion, Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage Season 2 Episode 13 was nearly perfect.

Mandy could have come off as selfish or self-pitying, and in fact, that’s how it seemed to Georgie.

But because her pain was relatable, her choices were understandable even though I didn’t like them.

It was hard enough for Mandy to face how the pregnancy and relationship with Georgie had derailed her life without feeling like somehow her much-younger husband was a lot further ahead in life.

Georgie’s birthday was probably a stark reminder of the age difference between them, too.

Georgie was finally 21 — a rite of passage for many American young adults because it means you can finally buy alcohol legally.

Mandy had passed that stage a long time ago, and is closer to 40 than she is to 21.

It wasn’t that long ago that she was waiting tables to make ends meet, and now she has no job at all after her dream turned to ashes.

It’s no wonder that she’s feeling disappointed enough in how her own life has turned out to want to drink herself into oblivion.

Mary’s Focus on Georgie Made It More Painful For Mandy

Mary absolutely should celebrate her son, especially on his birthday, but it only made Mandy feel more like she was failing at life.

From Mandy’s perspective, Georgie has everything he wants, while she has nothing.

Plus, Mary always makes it clear she doesn’t really approve of Mandy, and she overfocuses on Georgie in part because Sheldon is away doing something Mary doesn’t understand, and Missy is always in trouble.

So for Mary, Georgie is the one child she can dote on, but her attitude only makes Mandy feel more like she has to prove herself.

I’d love for Mandy to have a more big-sisterly role for Missy, though.

We know from The Big Bang Theory that Missy’s life didn’t turn out the way she wanted, either, but I’d love for someone to at least try to support her.

Georgie’s Reaction Shows He’s a Better Husband Than He Gets Credit For

Georgie had every reason to be hurt and angry that Mandy ruined his birthday.

Both celebrations were supposed to be about him, but Mandy did a lot of drinking and put the focus on herself and how miserable she is.

But although Georgie was angry, he not only forgave Mandy but also supported her.

He was right that she wasn’t too old — and that there was another way to look at the way her life had turned out.

Sometimes the things we regret most put us on the path toward something we wouldn’t want to live without, and Georgie reminded Mandy of that.

Of course, in their case, we know the marriage won’t last, so Georgie pointing out that Mandy’s mistakes led to their relationship isn’t as comforting as it seems.

Still, Georgie gets points for trying, and it’s clear he has both the will and the ability to be the empathetic, supporting partner Mandy needs him to be if she can just get over herself long enough to let him.
