Grey’s Anatomy delivers a powerful hour with medical cases and nostalgic moments.
It’s been a long time since I’ve felt so emotionally connected to an episode, but all I can wonder is whether the show can continue this pattern.
Grey’s Anatomy Season 22 Episode 13 is an hour that initially seemed like it would be a case of railroading Jules, but turns into a powerful, heavy episode.
Heavy and Heartbreaking Cases Rule the Episode
For the most part, it’s just one medical case that steals this whole episode, although it’s clear that the connection to the man who is suffering from prostate cancer is going to come up eventually.
Grey’s Anatomy has captured the magic that it used to have, and I’d hoped that this case would go here.
Katie’s cancer has progressed to the point where she is now in organ failure, and all Bailey can do is provide palliative care.
Of course, that’s not what Katie and her mom want, but the medication that was working was discontinued, and they’ve lost their options.
There is anger all around, and it’s all directed at Bailey. To be honest, I don’t blame them for directing the anger there.
It was just a couple of episodes ago that I said Bailey cares about her patients, but with Katie, she had given up.
Yes, we saw that she tried to find another clinical trial, but she didn’t quite fight in the way that she used to.
Now she’s dealing with a loss that reminds me so much of the little girl whose dad looked at treatments in Mexico. All she can do is hug, and it’s just not enough.
It makes sense why she pushed Lucas away so much as she realized how attached he was getting to the case. She needed to push away the guilt and anger.
The heartbreak in this is the reality, though. Bailey gets angry at the entire system, the bureaucracy that took a treatment that was working away from the patients.
All I can ask, though, is what will Bailey do after this?
She gave a child HIV to help him, so what is she going to do this time? There’s no point complaining if you’re not going to try to change the system.
This opens the door to an amazing medical-invention storyline that is needed. While I said I wanted Amelia to have a storyline like this, I’m also interested in Bailey having one.
I’m Done with Pick Me Girls
There is nothing to like about Mohanty at this point. While she’s not as hateful and evil as characters we’ve come across in the past, she’s still an awful character.
This is a woman willing to put her student’s career on the line for her own.
The entire storyline is the most frustrating thing, and I’d say that I thought we were past this type of problem, but I know we’re not.
I know plenty of women whom I refer to as “peaking in high school,” and they are the standard “Pick Me Girls,” who will do whatever they can to get whatever they want, even if they don’t deserve it.
Sure, the term usually refers to wanting particular men, but it can also involve careers. In Mohanty’s case, it clearly involves both.
What doesn’t help with this entire storyline is that Toni is supposed to be some world-renowned teacher, yet she’s never shown to have any great skills.
All she does is put students down, and while I know tough love is a thing, there’s a point at which it just becomes toxic and worthless.
This is already becoming one of those cases.
The only thing that I’m relieved about is that Blue is honest and picks the right side.
I worried that he would pick Mohanty, but he can’t be with someone who lies, and I don’t blame him.
If she’s willing to lie about a stitch to protect her career, what is she willing to lie about in a relationship? It sets them up for failure.
So, as Blue said, I hope Mohanty gets the job in Boston during Grey’s Anatomy Season 22.
One thing this arc offers is a chance for Winston and Jules to finally get back on track.
As much as I complain about the routine relationship drama, I’m going to sound like a hypocrite, because this type of slow-burning romance, I’m here for.
It’s clear that there is something between Winston and Jules, but they’ve constantly danced around the subject, and it’s not been the right time.
This episode of Grey’s Anatomy puts the romance back on the table, and all I can think after the mess that was Jules and Mika is that this better be worth the wait!
Webber Reminds Us of His Jar of Organs
It’s been a long time since we’ve seen Webber’s jar of organs, but every now and then, something comes up that reminds us of them.
That happens during the episode, and I have to say, it was a great moment of nostalgia.
There are elements from Grey’s Anatomy’s earlier years that stand out for their uniqueness or fun.
Think about Callie dancing in her underwear, or the Post-It Note. There are moments we just have to utter, and we’re all immediately taken back into those episodes.
That’s what Webber and his jar of organs does, and it’s something Grey’s Anatomy has completely lost in recent years.
There’s all this focus on relationships and family drama that we have lost the soul of the series, and we need Webber and Bailey to keep bringing that soul back.
On top of that, Webber proves that old-school medicine techniques aren’t useless.
While waiting for an MRI, Webber tests for the problem through the old tapping method. The best thing about this is that he teaches at the same time.
Geeky Intern — who reminds me a lot of “Glasses” — is so adorable in the way he misunderstands the question and wonders if he really needs to collect a jar of organs.
It helps lighten some of the episode’s storylines, which is definitely needed.
Parts of this episode really feel like we’ve got the old Grey’s Anatomy back, and this is what we need to see more of.
I feel like so many of us keep saying this, and nothing changes for long.
Could this be the time it does?
It certainly seems it with the ending, especially as Webber contemplates what he’s going to do next and the interns find a way to offer some sort of peace for Katie, but I don’t want to count my chickens before they hatch.
Grey’s Anatomy has a chance to get back on track with emotionally-driven, medical storylines. Now it just needs to commit.
