Jedidiah Goodacre made his Hallmark debut on Hope Valley: 1874 as Clayton, Tom’s ranch hand and the local blacksmith.
He’s a devoted worker and friend, but he’s also a creative artist and dreamer, crafting furniture and other wooden objects.
He shares that creative dream with his love interest, Olivia Quinn (Roan Curtis), and you can feel the romantic longing in their scenes. However, another suitor continues to pursue Olivia’s heart.
TV Fanatic recently chatted with Jedidiah Goodacre about Clayton’s feelings for Olivia, how this love triangle differs from others, and why he loves being with the horses so much.
It even included some entertaining behind-the-scenes moments.

Jedidiah Goodacre Shared His Enthusiasm for All Things Horses
While Goodacre praised his co-workers and friends on Hope Valley: 1874, he was especially enthusiastic about playing on a ranch with horses, calves, and chickens every day.
When I asked Goodacre about his favorite behind-the-scenes moments, he returned to his favorite moments with the horses.
“I absolutely love animals, and the chance to work around horses, have chickens running around, and have baby calves everywhere. It was a dream come true.
“I never sat in my trailer once on this show. Anytime I had a break, I hung out with the horses or ran around with the chickens.”
He shared that he figured he could learn how to ride a horse, and he did fine until Hope Valley: 1874 Season 1 Episode 4, when he drove the horse and wagon back to the ranch because Nash was injured.
He shared what a nerve-wracking experience that was, since the horses were beautiful but humongous. He was sure the stunt people would do it, but he had to do a few takes, too.
“These are like the biggest horses I’ve ever seen in my life. On my first take, I was a little bit nervous; I couldn’t steer the horses. They took off so fast, and they were so powerful.”
“One of the real ranchers looked at me before my final take and told me to pretend to be a cowboy, and the horses wouldn’t know the difference.”
He explained how they used that shot and that the experience was thrilling.
How Hope Valley: 1874’s Love Triangle Differs
Some love triangles get tiresome, but this one works because both of them are good, honorable characters, and they’re not fighting each other over Olivia.
Even Goodacre stated that he loved playing off Lachlan Quarmby, who portrays Alexander, and that the fun connection came through on-screen.
“There’s such a mutual respect. At their core, they’re good guys, and they’re in love with the same girl. They both want the best for Olivia.”
The triangle became more fun to root for them both since it’s based on mutual respect, i.e., may the best man win.
Making Clayton’s Intentions Known to Olivia
Friends-to-lovers is such an endearing romance trope, and it’s why so many fans already ship Olivia with Clayton.
The two of them grew up together in this small community, and while Clayton always went to the trading post as part of his job, now he’s got a new excuse.
He wants to see Olivia every chance he can.
You could see Goodacre’s enthusiasm for his pairing.
“Olivia’s this beautiful, intelligent, artistic woman who sees the world kind of the same way Clayton sees the world. They’re both filled with this innocence and that naive hope for the best.”
Goodacre told us that Clayton is drawn to that wonder, but that viewers may get impatient with how long it takes him to make a move.
“Clayton is a bit shy, and she means a lot to him. Some people are important to him, so he doesn’t want to make the wrong move, and that’s why he’s tiptoeing around things.”
Goodacre teased that as Hope Valley: 1874 Season 1 progresses, we’ll see Clayton become more vulnerable with Olivia.
What Viewers Can Look Forward to as Clayton’s Story Evolves
The series has only scratched the surface of Clayton’s potential, since there is so much they could explore, such as his craft of furniture-making or his friendships with Tom and Nash.
I also love his blossoming romance with Olivia, and so does Goodacre.
“I hope things continue to develop with Olivia. There’s a lot up in the air right now. We have these two guys, myself, and Alexander, who are in love with her, but she’s also got her own dreams.”
“Olivia has been thinking about going off to the big city.”
Goodacre also wants more solo stories that feature Clayton’s bravery and loyalty.
“I want the series to show what he’s willing to do for the people he loves because that’s one of his best qualities.”
