Jill Hennessy, Roan Curtis, and Lachlan Quarmby on Strong Relationships in Hope Valley:1874

When Hallmark+ introduced a new spinoff of When Calls the Heart, viewers expected dashing Mounties, complicated characters, and romance.

Hope Valley: 1874 features all of that, but at its core, the frontier drama is about new beginnings, fierce females, and believing in one another.

In the video interview below, Jill Hennessy, Roan Curtis, and Lachlan Quarmby discuss the series’ appeal and how its rich relationships will draw you in.

A Story of Warmth and Community

Jill Hennessy loved that Hope Valley: 1874 spoke about the essence of community, which was essential to survive on the frontier.

What drew her in most was that everyone worked to support one another, whether it was building a boarding house or something else; these people made it work.

You needed determined no-nonsense characters like Hattie who got things done because there was no other option.

For those who loved When Calls the Heart for its community stories, Hattie Quinn is at the heart of that community.

Roan Curtin, who plays Hattie’s daughter, Olivia, appreciated that the series focused on women supporting each other and compared the series to the “warm hug” we need now.

Hope Valley: 1874 Features Fierce Females

Hope Valley: 1874 brings back what many TV shows have been lacking – fierce females and strong friendships.

Hennessy appreciated that the series featured strong female friendships that dealt with everyday issues.

She especially liked and thought viewers would appreciate how Hattie and Rebecca (Bethany Joy Lenz) confronted similar emotional issues in their past and supported each other.

They were fiercely independent women, but were better together, and strived to teach these lessons to their daughters.

Curtis added that while Olivia differs from her mom, she’s dreamed of becoming an artist, which wasn’t exactly practical on the frontier.

But she teases that we’ll see things change for Olivia throughout the season, not only in love but also in her career and in how her mom perceives her dreams.

A New Love Triangle Will Entice the Audience

This has been Lachlan Quarmby‘s lucky year. It’s his second love triangle, and he relishes the role of feeling unrequited love again.

However, Roan Curtis teased that she enjoyed being chased by two men, rather than her character being the second choice, as in many other shows.

Curtis teased that Olivia feels an immediate spark with Constable Alexander Vaughn (Quarmby), while things also develop with her old friend Clayton (Jedidiah Goodacre)

Hennessy acted proud of both of them, teasing that viewers would love the blossoming connections and hinting that it was not a stereotypical love triangle.

She added how fond she’d grown of Alexander, even though some locals didn’t trust the new constable.

What the Fans Can Look Forward To

While Hope Valley: 1874 is a prequel to When Calls the Heart, it’s also a unique show, and the cast teased what they think audiences will like, including a different type of romance.

Both Hennessy and Quarmby also added that the series has a likeable ensemble, and viewers may find even the minor characters intriguing.

Almost everyone interweaves at times, whether it’s in conflict or support, so you’ll have to tune in.
