Manifest Spinoff to Take Flight — But I’m Predicting Turbulence

Do you ever feel like a beloved show goes off the air and the creatives hold on to the idea of revisiting the franchise, only for any future series to never get the green light?

That’s sort of where Manifest was when it wrapped up after four seasons back in 2023.

The series had been canceled by NBC a few years earlier, but the fan base streamed the hell out of it on Netflix, prompting the streamer to swoop in and order a 20-episode fourth and final season.

There was certainly a desire for more from the series, but Manifest Season 4 closed the story in a way that was satisfying on paper and frustrating in execution.

The first half was fast-paced and vintage Manifest, but the final 10 episodes nosedived in quality. While I was happy the show came full circle overall, the journey was turbulent.

So, you can only imagine my surprise when Netflix sent out a press release this morning about Arrivals: A Manifest Mystery.

The things I read about a potential spinoff over the years felt like the kind of lip service you get from creatives when their beloved TV show ends.

You know the drill. Someone says they’d love to explore the universe again, fans get excited, and then nothing ever happens.

But now that it’s actually here, I’m cautious about how this series will work out.

Manifest Is Getting a Spinoff With an All-New Cast

According to Netflix, it’s designed to appeal to Manifest Fanatics and new viewers alike by featuring a new mystery and a new cast.

Does that rule out cameos from the original stars? I don’t think so.

But it certainly sounds like Arrivals: A Manifest Mystery will be breaking free of the shackles of its predecessor’s storyline.

And that’s where I have questions.

A lot of questions.

Manifest Season 4 Episode 20 effectively undid everything that happened in the series, so where would any returning characters even fit into the narrative?

Everyone who walked off the plane in the series finale remembered EVERYTHING that happened during the five and a half years, while the non-passengers forgot everything.

That’s a potentially fascinating story engine in itself.

Ben, Michaela, and the other passengers lived through the Callings, the Death Date, the lifeboat, and Judgment Day.

They know what happened, even though the world around them has essentially been reset.

If something similar happens again, they would presumably be among the few people with any idea of what they’re dealing with.

But if Arrivals is moving away from those characters and telling an entirely new story, what exactly is the hook?

That’s the part I’m struggling with.

I can understand why Netflix would want to revisit a franchise with an established fan base.

There will naturally be curiosity and buzz surrounding a new series set in the Manifest universe.

But I’m wondering if the new mystery will simply be a cash grab designed to lure Manifest fans back in without actually giving them anything meaningful from the original series.

Obviously, I could be way off base here.

There’s a Severe Lack of Information About Arrivals

We haven’t been given enough information about the story for me to make any definitive judgment.

Without a logline that actually dives into the setup for the new series, what else am I supposed to do?

I’m intrigued. I’m just not convinced yet.

And if Netflix is serious about making this work, I hope it learns from what made Manifest frustrating.

Manifest operated with a larger episode order because it started as a broadcast original, but the worst thing Arrivals: A Manifest Mystery can do is try to replicate that formula.

The original series sometimes had an incredible high-concept mystery at its center, only for the story to spend far too much time circling around it.

A spinoff needs to be intricately mapped out from the beginning.

The mystery needs to drive the story; the characters need compelling reasons to keep digging; and the major story beats need to feel earned rather than spoon-fed after long spells of nothing happening.

I want Arrivals: A Manifest Mystery to succeed.

I’m just hoping Netflix knows exactly where it’s going before this particular flight takes off.
